It is well known that China has poured a fortune into football, so it must be more than a little embarrassing to be beaten 1-0 by war torn Syria today. But I still hope they qualify.

I wasn't aware they had poured a fortune into developing Chinese players. I know a lot of rich Chinese are buying stakes in professional football clubs, but I didn't knew about grassroots funding.

China is top tier in women's soccer/football. I wonder what's causing the men to not be good. In the United States it's the fact that soccer is the most popular sport among girls but not among boys. I don't think that would be the case in China with their national sports system.

Very happy for Syria to have something, however insignificant, to celebrate.

Well China lost 2-0 to Uzbekistan yesterday so qualifying for 2018 looks to get out of the question. I guess better luck next time?!

USA v Mexico in a CONCACAF Hexagonal World Cup Qualifier on FS1 at 7PM or so on 11/11/2016. This is usually war by another means. Especially after all the kind, gentle compliments our next president has directed towards the people of Mexico....;)

The USAWNT played their 1st game ever vs the WNT from Romania. Final score? USA 8 v 1 Romania. These 2 teams play again Sunday in the US's last game for 2016. I am expecting more of the same. It seems the rebuild from the Olympics is on track.

Dos a cero is dead. Final from Columbus, OH: USA 1 v 2 Mexico. USA next plays away at Costa Rica. The USA has never won a game in Costa Rica.

Hopefully, the US away record against Costa Rica will die too. I think the team looked really good for much of the match, but a couple bad misses on defense doomed them. Also, the Mexican team was probably one of the strongest they have ever fielded. I don't recall seeing Dos Santos, Vela, and Chicharito all playing at the same time since they were U17.

Nope. Epic fail. CRC 4 v 0 USA.

USA now has 8 games, including a game in Mexico where we have won once, to get one of the top 3 spots in the hex, I now very much doubt they can make it to 1st, and advance to WC 2018. It can be done, but it will not be easy.

Well, maybe Mexico will return the favor after we helped them out last time. One can hope...

Well the U.S. is now looking for a new head coach and Klinsmann is looking for a new job. Guess I shouldn't be surprised.

There were some things I really liked about Klinsmann, but I agree it was time for him to go. Just too many bad losses since Brazil, and the team just unable to get into any kind of positive rhythm, and also the team just doesn't seem motivated to play for him anymore.

I guess it's now expected that Bruce Arena will take over as interim coach. What does everyone think about that??

Arena is not long term. He has one task and only one task: get the USAMNT to Russia in 2018. All else is secondary. If he does that he'll probably coach the team at the WC and be dismissed after. If not, he's gone as soon as he fails. Who knows who will replace Arena whenever he leaves.

:blah: Get ready to see even more of Bradley, Jones, Zusi, et al. Arena is a huge cheerleader for the MLS, said that "the majority of the players should come out of Major League Soccer", and has made some concerning comments about American players raised in other countries that I fear could cause tension within the team.

Lazy appointment of a USSF yes man.

The last year or so has been pretty bad for the USMNT and then these last two games were disasterous, especially against CRC. The team just quit in the second half, and that doomed Klinsmann.

Arena is the best choice going forward. He'll only take the job through the WC (assuing they get there) and then someone like Tab Ramos will take it from there. And sure, he's more familiar with the MLS players, but there's no way he'll be ignoring the players playing in Europe like Brooks, Pulisic, Wood and Green.

There's a pretty big story coming out of England about sexual abuse in youth teams. Some pretty high achieving players were abused. The cases revealed so far primarily implicate a youth coach at Crewe Alexandra Football Club named Barry Bennell. There are some other youth coaches who have been reported to authorities, but their names have not been made public.

I'm not surprised. With so many youth coaches and so many kids, you know there had to be some cases.

I'm also not surprised that it's come to light that club directors and authorities were told but didn't investigate.

I can't imagine what it is like for the families an community to be on such a high over their Cinderella story only to end like this. A few days ago I watched the Pele story on Netflix which I really enjoyed an it gives you a sense of how football isn't just a sport.. which I get having had pro family members an even my own life which has been often come second to the 'match', devastating :(
