Aaahhhh, Rohene Ward. What couldn’t he do well?

Jumping in both directions! Amazing and unusual spins! Flexibility beyond belief! Choreographing his own programs! Signature moves! And all that talent from a kid with a disadvantaged background who had to take several bus transfers to the rink every day by himself to make it happen. And while he never reached the podium at the US Figure Skating Championships, Rohene Ward became one of the most well-known and beloved crowd favorites American audiences had ever seen. Rohene Ward talks about his first pair of skates, how he learned to jump both ways, the sacrifices by his coach to support him, and overcoming incredible racism. 32 minutes, 26 seconds.

Listen to the interview on my website at manleywoman.com or soon at the iTunes Store.

    Thanks for listening!

Thanks so much for the interview! :) I loved listening to it.

ETA: :respec: to Rohene, not only for his unique skating, but for having to deal with racism, prejudice and overcoming so much just to skate.

Another great interview, thanks Manleywoman, such a professional interviewing job of a fantabulous skater.

Another wonderful interview, Allison! Rohene kind of has that enigmatic Toller Cranston like spirit on the ice... he's great!

    Thanks, Manleywoman.
I adore the ability to spin and jump in both directions. So cool!

I have a question re. a section of the interview. I couldn't understand the wording at 29.07s, "Even …??... we are doing turns." What did Rohene say?
  13. Sylvia

Sylvia Prepping for club comp. season!

I believe this is when Rohene was talking about his obsession with skating when he was young (practicing at the rink all day, watching it on TV, doing extra stretching at home, etc.) and so he joked that "Even my Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were doing turns with music!"

Since he'll be rejoining the "Holiday on Ice" tour this fall, I hope you can finish your interview with him before he leaves the U.S. (sometime next month?). Thanks, manleywoman! :)

Yes, thank you for answering this. I made a mental note to listen again and see what specifically Vocal needed, but I forgot. Big thanks to Sylvia for stepping up!

Me too, though so far he's been more elusive than Dick Button. Even though at least twice he's butt-dialed me late at night from loud parties.

FYI everyone: this interview is now transcribed. Thanks
