I remember hearing from someone that Joannie fixed her lutz technique after the 2007-2008 season after having so many problems with the triple lutz. What exactly was the problem with her lutz then and the difference with the lutz now? It looked pretty much the same to me, except maybe she is getting into the rotation faster. Any thoughts?

She fixed her technique after the 2002-2003 season. She used to flutz, but ever since she's had a perfect outside edge on her lutzes :respec:

Definately. Joannie now has one of the best Lutzes out there!

I think she does, too. I'll second that! :respec:

Once of the best lutzes out there when she lands it!

^ I know about the flutzing part, but we all know about how she had problems with it bad in 2007-2008, and I heard she worked to change the technique again...

i remember joannie flutzing a few years ago, but just looked at some videos from 2003-2005 and see her taking off of an outside edge. does anyone have a link to a video where she flutzed?

I think you're confused. She didn't have problems with it bad in 07-08. AFAIK, she skated 5 competitions that season (SC, COR, 4CC, Canadians, Worlds) and she landed 11 perfect lutzes out of 15 attempts (and only fell on it once)

    That's a pretty good average

I've only ever seen her lutz before getting fixed once (I think in nationals 03), but no link. sorry :(

Really ? I've never heard about this story. And honestly, she didn't have that much troubles with her 3Lutz, not 100% consistent, but not worse than other jumps. ;)

Normal, her Flutz dates back to 2002.
She had a weird mule-kick, and didn't bend her left knee, that's why she didn't get the height to rotate.

You can see her switch to the inside edge before take off in this video of her 2002 Jr. Worlds LP. She was fixing it during the 2002-2003 season where she mostly popped or fell on the jump. By Worlds that season she was able to land her 3lutz from a true outside edge entry: 2003 Worlds SP :) (I love her skating there!). In the 2003-2004 season, she landed quite a few true lutzes successfully.

Wow, that was beautiful! Dare I say she was pwetty-princess-esque (in a good way). The speed of those jump rotations was just terrific.

Interesting LP from 2002 JW for Rochette. Her jumps have come a long way since then. Wow.

I think Joannie has gone through small adjustments a couple of times since she corrected flutz. I guess old habits die hard. Even then, Joannie never went back to flutz, tho. It was just the degree of knee bend of the skating leg as briancoogaert mentioned. She was holding it long enough not to flutz yet was not generating enough power from the Lutz mechanism (shifting her weight to toe-pick a lil too early I think). I am not sure, however, if it was the 2007-2008 season. At any rate, I hope some of the U.S. ladies who should learn from Joannie on Lutz as they share the same jump mechanics.
