Stephanie Rosenthal's "Rockit" SP at 2006 U.S. Nationals: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rnkku5aJzZM
Jenny Kirk - Puttin' on the Ritz
Mao Asada's SP in 2013
Stephanie Rosenthal's SP & LP at the 2006 US nationals
I will think of more later, but these came to my mind immediately. I am sure there are men who had fun programs skated to modern music too.
How do you define "modern"?
Hummm, I guess something within the last 50 years. But more so music that would be unexpected in skating....like Hot Butter's Popcorn to today's Icona's I love it.
I thought this was fun.
I'll try to think of some more.
Takahashi's Cyber Swan http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-UxKhsJdZs
Plushenko's Michael Jackson SP in 2002
It was original, parts of it were very fun, and it meant someone skating to Smack My Bitch Up (among other things) at the Olympics: I vote for Adrian Schultheiss and his 2009-10 free skate.
Also I think that when Joubert skated Rise well, it had great energy and was pretty fun. Clearly agreed, which is the main reason I am linking this performance and not the better version from 2010 Worlds (in which he had a somewhat less awful costume and toned down hip thrusts).
Yu na Kim's James Bond SP in 2010
Kristi Yamaguchi's Doop Doop SP--1995
I like programs to modern/contemporary music and think of them as memorable when the skaters develop their own language of movements and don`t just do a "regular style" to modern music, thus just pretending to do something out of the ordinary.
Thought of Eman in 2005/2006:
or Abbott in 2010:
Was it a pro competition? - It had to be; Kristi turned pro in 1992. In that case it would be called either Technical or Artistic program (there were no SP & LP in the pros- AFAIK).
It was a technical program. However, I believe it was set up just like a SP. I remember it even had a spiral sequence. She may have used it in a Pro/Am. You can find it on You Tube. Sorry, I don't know how to copy it--maybe someone else can.
It was a pro-am, which used a regulation short program and then an artistic program.
Some of my favorites, just off the top of my head:
Brian Joubert - 2013 SP
Michelle Kwan - A Day In The Life
Abitbol/Bernadis - The Addams Family
Maria Butyrskaya - Fever
Bebe Liang - Harry Potter
Jenny Kirk - Chicago
Savchenko/Szolkowy - Souvenir
Michelle Cantu - 42nd Street
This is one of my all time favourites - Punsalan & Swallow race cars
Yagudin's Racing program to Safri Duo music, though he only skated it in ISU competition once, at Skate America in 2002 when his hip was really starting to give him trouble. He skated it later in the Hallmark and Sears Open competitions. Fun concept and great choreography to carry it off. It's my favorite of all his short programs.
Bourne/Kraatz - Michael Jackson FD 2002
Virtue/Moir - Pink Floyd FD 2009
Navarro/Bommentre - U2 "One" FD 2010
Pechalat/Bourzat - Rolling Stones FD 2013, and OD in 2010 to "Thank God I'm a Country Boy"
Tonya Harding, 1991 Worlds SP:
Debi Thomas, 1988 Olympics SP:
Does that mean V/M's samba FD counts? (well until everyone started using Mujer Latine for their SD the following season)
IIRC Savchenko-Szolkowy skated a 'clown' SP in the last few years, but I don't remember the music.
Send in the Clowns from A Little Night Music. Another modern & fun program from them was their Pink Panther FS.
They got the compulsory pattern all wrong, but I loved Agafonova/Ucar's SD to Faiytale by Alexander Rybak.
Canadian skater (Haitian background), Maxime-Billy Fortin, choreographed by none other than Julie Marcotte:
"Makes you want to get out there and move along with him..." Tracy Wilson
Max Aaron 2012-13 sp:
Stephanie Rosenthal's 2006 Rock-it sp at USNats already mentioned; here's her 2006 FS to Ghost Dances:
ITA also re Punsalan's and Swallow's Racing Cars FD -- iconic and memorable.
Anything by Gary Beacom, including:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-iJLlBn8-pE 1988 World Cup of Figure Skating
Gary improvising to Johnny Cash's Bird on a Wire -- hadn't seen this one before
I'm Your Man .... Nuff said!
Gary in Malevolent Landscape:
Quirky skating by Gary to a Beethoven classic makes for modern mix/ twist:
2006 Super Match performance by Gary:
Gary at a 2010 Dundee exhibition shows he's lost none of his skill/ on-ice magic:
Wow, another funky 2010 performance by Gary to modern techno music:
Last on this current list but certainly not least, the incomparable Torvill and Dean, ROCK the compulsories! Wowsa
Absolutely Aliona and Robin have many fun, different performances, including:
I don't know if these fall into the category of modern music but they were definitely fun and energetic programs.
I really liked Kaetlyn Osmond's SP this season. She impressed me b/c she matched the energy of the music and didn't let it run over her, which is hard to do.
I'm also a huge sucker for Kanako Murakami's "Jumpin Jack" program. Lots of energy, very fun and she had a blast with it. I'm not all at ashamed to say this was my favorite SP of the 2010-2011 season.
Plushenko http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Piijc1x748 exhibition program, he is doing brakedance
Joubert http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PXy-qmNnic the original Matrix in 2004
Love, love Akiko Suzuki's 2012-13 sp to Kill Bill music:
Not an easy program to master, but Akiko owned it at 4CC earlier this year!
Surya Bonaly at 1993 Worlds:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NL2Jlg-O_lU Not modern music (Vivaldi's Four Seasons), but Bonaly makes it seem modern
I love all of these - so far my favorite is Kanako Murakami's "Jumpin Jack" program - her face is pure joy.
This reminds me of why I loved this program; and his performance of it, so much.
