The 2017 World Junior medalists are all age-eligible to be selected for the Grand Prix:
Alina Zagitova, Marin Honda, Kaori Sakamoto;
Vincent Zhou, Dmitri Aliev, Alexander Samarin;
Parsons/Parsons, Loboda/Drozd, Carreira/Ponomarenko (C/P likely to remain on JGP);
Alexandrovskaya/Windsor, Boikova/Kozlovskii, Gao/Xie (all 3 pairs are still ISU Junior age-eligible but the latter 2 are more likely to return to JGP than A/W who are aiming to qualify an Olympic berth at Nebelhorn Trophy).

USA's Parsons/Parsons, McNamara/Carpenter (SB 22) and Liu/Johnson all have aged out of ISU Junior; ditto for Loboda/Drozd and France's Kevin Aymoz and Abachkina/Thauron.

I expect Korea's Jun Hwan CHA (currently SB 24) to move up to the Sr. GP because, at 15, he is age-eligible for the Olympics in his home country next year.

Anna DUSKOVA / Martin BIDAR (SB 17) should also debut on the Sr. GP this fall.
Polina TSURSKAYA (SB 19) may likely as well.

ETA that only 2 ladies in the top 24 SB -- Anastasiia GUBANOVA & Rika KIHIRA -- too young (14) for Sr. GP.

Both Parsons (19/21) and Carpenter (21) will have aged out of Juniors for next season. Carreira has another two years of junior eligibility -- she just turned 17 this month -- but someone else may have heard what their plans are.

As far as the Russian Ladies are concerned, the Russian Fed has to submit them for GP, and Lipnitskaia may be vulnerable depending on which skaters go senior and what the Russian Fed's strategy is for the Olympic season. For example, if submitted:
  • The following skaters are guaranteed two from Worlds:
    • Medvedeva
    • Sotskova
  • The following skaters are guaranteed one from SB 24:
    • Pogorilaya-4
    • Zagitova-7 (turns 15 next month)
    • Radionova-8, with WTT to go
    • Tsurskaya-19
    • Tuktamysheva-20
    • Leonova-23
(Gubanova doesn't turn 15 until December, too late for this season.)

Not guaranteed any, but on the SB list:
  • Konstantinova-27
  • Sakhonovitch-41
  • Lipnitskaia-52
  • Fedichkina-53
  • Ogoreltseva-56
  • Lozko-57 (turns 15 in June)
Given that there are 12 spots for singles at each event, it would highly unlikely for Pogorilaya, Zagitova, or Radionova, all in Top 10 SB, not to get a second, and that could also apply to Tsurskaya, if she goes senior, which is 12 spots right there, and maybe even Tuktamysheva. Then add in a TBA for Rostelecom Cup, and that 13-15 spots before Leonova (if they submit her). It could be very tough for Lipnitskaia, if the Russian Fed submits her.

Dance teams that age up this season and could make the Grand Prix include:
The Parsons (top 24)
Loboda & Drozd (top 24)
McNamara & Carpenter (top 24)
Abachkina & Thauron (eligible for a host spot in France)

And I think . . .
Fukase & Tateno (which could finally fill Japan's third host spot in dance)

Surely someone will want to be in good favor with China and invite Wang/Liu to a second event, since they've been to the 2014-16 Cup of China.

Probably. They will need the favor, though, I think. They wouldn't need it if China had sent them out on the Challenger Series. W&L had a great season overall.

The World Dance rankings for next season are just as crazy as ever. If the list on GS is correct, Papadakis & Cizeron fall to 7th. Chock & Bates are still in the lead after winning zero competitions this season. The Shibs remain just behind C&B after defeating them in their four head-to-heads this year. Bobrova & Soloviev move above Cappellini & Lanotte who move over Hubbell & Donahue who move over Weaver & Poje. And Guignard & Fabbri remain over Virtue & Moir, now 9th. Meanwhile, guess who's sitting in 24th? Ilinykh & Zhiganshin, who--now that they finally have three seasons together--have dropped in the rankings. And Sinitsina & Katsalapov move up two spots to 16th. Muramoto & Reed are over Hawayek & Baker. The whole thing is just . I know how everybody got there, but the idea that these are the world rankings is LOL. And people think dance is predictable. (Once again, only 4 dance teams at Worlds finished in the same place during the SD and FD this season. Unlike last season, none of those teams were on the podium).

I've got P&C in 7th, but my numbers could be wrong. C/B got 540 from two CS 2nds, while the Shibs had no senior internationals; C/B have 3/4 international points slots filled while the Shibs have only 1/4 over the last two seasons, with the four highest counting, 750 international points to 170, leading the Shibs by 92 in my math. The difference between the 680 points C/B earned from bronze at 4C's and the 972 that the Shibs got for World bronze is 292 points.

Yes, you can see how everyone wound up where they are when you think about it. But it's always a double take when you see the results heading one way and the rankings heading in the opposite direction. I'm always thinking, well, now they've been together long enough. Or now we are a full season away from the injury. But that's when the bottom set of scores falls away & you realize the full extent of damage done the season before.

Well, Roberto Rodeghiero was top 10 WS one season, and the Helgessons used to be high in WS because they did every last senior international, and because the Euros Ladies fields weren't very deep after the top four or so. Plus, they were draws, with crowds finding them charming, and hosts finding them not formidable competition for the hosts' skaters.

But losing a season really put a dent in Papadakis/Cizeron's ranking. You expect it from Virtue/Moir, having taken seasons off, but P/C won a World title without having competed in GP or senior internationals last season, and even though they also won Euros, they only got one set of championship points. Which I think is silly and artificially inflates the importance of other events.

I was wondering if the points totals on GS are correct. Is it a simple matter of deleting 2014/2015 points, taking 70% of 2015/2016 points and adding 2016/2017 points for each competitor, or does something else need to be considered? Because using that formula for Kolyada (and using the total points from the SB 2015/16 and 2016/17 lists), I get:

2015/16: 1657 * .70 = 1159.90
2016/17: 1453
Total: 2612.90 = 2613

However, according to the post by Chuckm on GS, Kolyada will have 2438 points after ISU scrubs the data. Which is the correct number / methodology?

Thanks!

You've got the right basic formulas for two seasons, where everything counts. (When there are three seasons, you take the highest two for championships and highest four for GP and internationals.) I just can't remember if the trim or round each factored value before summing for 2015-16, or whether they sum, then trim or round. That only makes a difference for figuring out Top 24 WS for GP if the totals are within points of each other.

I don't have my spreadsheet handy, but I can check later.

The world rankings are a joke. Considering how unpredictable figure skating is they should only be taking into account the current season just ended instead of going back two years ago when skaters made have had their one great season but haven't done much of anything since then yet are still high in the rankings from that one fluke season.

The World Rankings are points earned in the current season. They were used for one or two years to award piles of money to the "podium" for each discipline. However, the money is no longer there.

World Standings cover three seasons, with two seasons prior factored by .7.

In which case you would have Bobrova & Soloviev in second and Weaver & Poje in tenth. Two teams that finished 0.75 away from each other at Worlds, in the opposite order.

Season rankings are still all over the map relative to where teams finish head-to-head. (And, of course, many teams change rankings during the season or never meet head-to-head). Essentially, there are many ways to qualify for the GP, and that's good because no two teams have the same season, the same obstacles, or the same career.

1-Meagan DUHAMEL / Eric RADFORD (CAN)-new total: 4424 (season end rank=1)
2-Evgenia TARASOVA / Vladimir MOROZOV (RUS)-new total: 4335 (season end rank=2)
3-Aliona SAVCHENKO / Bruno MASSOT (GER)-new total: 3752 (season end rank=4)
4-Vanessa JAMES / Morgan CIPRES (FRA)-new total: 3242 (season end rank=6)
5-Ksenia STOLBOVA / Fedor KLIMOV (RUS)-new total: 3162 (season end rank=3)
6-Wenjing SUI / Cong HAN (CHN)-new total: 3040 (season end rank=5)

The pair that was 7th at Worlds is 1st and the pair that won Worlds is 6th. And that's why I don't pay attention to World Ranking.
James/Cipres in 4th ahead of Stolbova/Klimov and Sui/Han? Clearly that's because S/K and S/H were injured and missed competitions.

*divas Stolbova and Sui plot Olympic season revenge*

ETA: I was doing some manual adjustments to my pre-Worlds numbers when I calculated the difference between C/B and the Shibs adjusted totals up thread. C/B are 118 points ahead.

Won't this change slightly after WTT?

Is it World RANK or World STANDING that determines whether a skater is "top 10" and thus is "seeded"/last 2 groups for the short program/dance at Olympics?

Top 10 has nothing to do with it.

All SD/SP seeding is based on WS. WR was only used for a couple of years by the ISU to give money to the top three in each discipline in WR at the end of the season, and by USFS mistakenly as a criteria for WTT one year, when, haha, they really meant WS.

If Korea qualifies for a discipline, the Top X in each discipline, ie, 6 for singles, 5 for Dance, and 4 for Pairs in WS at the cut-off point, which includes Euris and, IIRC, 4C's -- draw for all the spots in the last group. The next 6/5/4 draw for spots in the penultimate group. The next 3/2/2 draw for the last three spots in the third group. The rest of the field starts in the first half.

The wrinkle is that if Korea doesn't qualify for a discipline, the rules say that the first flight is expanded by one, and the Korean skater/team skates first, but they don't explicitly say that this host spot is excluded from the skating later/earlier math. Since odd numbers increase the skating later half, the number of skaters drawing for the last spots in group three could increase by one, based on a field of 31 and/or 25 and/or 21.

If Korea doesn't qualify but appoints a host spot, then that skater/team skates first in the expanded first group of five groups. (This is different from Worlds/Euros/4C's where they'd add a group with the additional skater/team.). Then any unranked skater/team, ie, those with no WS points, draw for the early starting spots, and the rest of the starting earlier group draws for the remaining spots in groups one-three.
