I tried to watch Scott & Bailey but just couldn't get into it. The cases seems to be secondary to the personal shenanigans of the main characters. Found the series just meh.

I bailed after the first episode because I hated hated hated how the one detective reacted to her breakup.

I never heard about the show, but from you guys said about it I ended up looking it up. Shame it doesn't sound too great because I've became a fan of Suranne Jones after seeing her in Doctor Foster and then watching the prematurely canceled The Crimson Field.

I'm a fan too. I like Scott (Lesley Sharp) and her boss, Gill Murray (Amelia Bulmore) in particular. It's good to see older women cast in these type of shows, and both are very good actresses IMO. Also like Bailey's sister and Scott's mother.

I liked it. I enjoy watching women at work and interacting with each other. Some of the cases were more interesting than others.

By the third season it seemed to be happening in a world where the Manchester police department is almost all run by women. Interesting to see what that would look like. A less macho style of policing than we usually see in US cop shows.

Lesley Sharp! I remember her very well from movies like Naked, Priest, Close My Eyes, and The Full Monty. Nice to hear that she's still keeping busy.

Started watching "Mozart In The Jungle" on Prime and already the stoner timpani player is my favorite character. I've only watched the first season so I'm eager to get through seasons 2 and 3.

Also watching Grace and Frankie and think the writing has improved quite a bit.

Good to know. I watched the first season and didn't think the writing was very good, so I haven't watched since. Maybe I'll check it out again.

I loved the first season. The second season wasn't as good. The third season was incredibly disappointing. I hated the direction they took with Hailey.

I've started several series lately that I didn't finish. I finally checked out The Durrells in Corfu. It was entertaining escapism in a lovely setting. I really enjoyed it.

I just binged on season one of Ingobernable on Netflix.

So intense, so bloody, so many plot twists. Very highly recommended. :smokin: :respec:

It's kind of like a Mexican House of Cards, but sexier, bloodier, a little soapier, with just a touch of Breaking Bad, too.

Harlots on Hulu has been excellent! I was really skeptical when I started the first episode, but it's really so good. Definitely hope it gets renewed for season 2.

Can't wait for Handmaid's Tale tomorrow!!

I've never seen this. This sounds right up my alley, as I love detective shows and cooking. :)
If you haven't been able to find it, I just got a message from AcornTV (which also has Vera) that it now has all 5 seasons of Pie in the Sky. I was able to find most of it on DVD through our county library system. Here is Acorn's description:

Detective Inspector Henry Crabbe (Richard Griffiths, Harry Potter, The History Boys) has been a policeman for 25 years, but he’s craving a change. Crabbe finally leaves the force and opens his dream restaurant, Pie in the Sky, with his penny-pinching accountant wife (Maggie Steed, Shine on Harvey Moon). He hopes to while away his retirement serving up his favorite dishes, but his old boss (Malcolm Sinclair, Casino Royale) puts his plans on the back burner, keeping Crabbe’s plate full with tricky cases.

In these five complete series Griffiths gives a “brilliantly understated performance” (The Times, U.K.) in the classic cozy mystery that’s been called “an enjoyably British mix of character comedy and murder mystery with a light touch” (MSN Entertainment). Guest stars include Michael Kitchen (Foyle’s War), Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings), Pete Postlethwaite (In the Name of the Father), Julian Fellowes (Monarch of the Glen), Keeley Hawes (Ashes to Ashes), Jane Wymark (Midsomer Murders), Kelly Reilly (Sherlock Holmes), and Nicola Walker (Touching Evil, MI-5).

(I may have to rewatch the episode with Nicola Walker!)

That sounds really good, @Spun Silver. One of these days, I'll get AcornTV. It's a channel on the Fire Stick. Someday. That and MHz channel. :)

I'm sorry. I should've checked. I saw it last year and didn't realize it was Belgian. I thought it was very good.
Thanks again, I started to watch it and it reminds me of True Detective especially the opening credits music and atmosphere. The main lead is really good and carries the show very well. Can't wait to see where it leads, I'm at episode 5. Is there gonna be a 2 season or is it a mini-serie ?

I really want to see The Handmaid's Tale, but I'm balking subscribing to Hulu. I have Netflix and Amazon Prime. Is another subscription worth it?

Same for me! I think I'm going to go ahead and subscribe for a month or two, just to see Handmaid's Tale. There's another series on there that I want to see as well (Manhattan), so I'm thinking that will make it a little more worth it. :D

Is there anyone you could share a Hulu account with? I split the cost of an account with one of my friends - I didn't want to pay for another subscription either since I have Netflix, so that makes it easier.

The Handmaid's Tale is amazing, so I hope you find a way to see it!!

Totally agree. My sister pays for Netflix and I pay for Hulu. We alternate years paying for Amazon Prime and Costco!

I actually started The Handmaid's Tale yesterday. I liked it a lot. But eerily you can draw parallels to what's going on today. I plan on watching the rest on my next off day.

I did the same. Watched all of the first 3 episodes yesterday--liked it a lot but you can find lots of eerie parallels to today's current events.

I felt very anxious while watching it the other day. It's all disturbingly realistic; Margaret Atwood drew from real world events for the book and the show just the same, of course. But the production value is top notch.

I've been wondering the same thing. I have Netflix and Amazon Prime as well. I'm trying to rein in my spending. It's hard to rationalize adding Acorn or Hulu. There's only so much I can or will watch. But they have free trials. I might check them out and see if I'd rather substitute one of them for Netflix, at least for a few months. I did a free trial of HBO and realized that there wasn't much that I wanted to see. I might also consider dropping my cable tv to try something like Sling. The cost of Acorn pales in comparison to what I'm paying for cable.

I read the Handmaid's Tale years ago. I'm not sure if I want to watch it -- precisely because it is too disturbing and too evocative of current events. I need some escapism right now. Anybody got any good ideas for engaging escapism that isn't too fluffy?

I don't know. That's a good question. And I misunderstood your previous post. I thought you meant Witnesses was Belgian. That's what I saw last year. I'm currently watching The Break. It is very gripping.
