Emily Hughes: NEW New York Times article

Quite an exciting story -- replacing famous skaters twice, right before major events (and so perfect that it should be Cohen now, as it was Kwan then, because from what I gather, those two, Kwan and Cohen, had some kind of rivalry, back in the day).

If Emily skates well, it will be an amazing narrative -- part Cinderella story, part The Natural (you know, taking time off, then coming back to shine).

Impress? An opportunity lost more like it. How embarrassing. We just saw her skate a couple of weeks ago, and it wasn't impressive at all.

Does this get her a bye from sectionals, or are they far enough apart that it is not considered a conflict?

Kendal Wykoff is in her Lake Placid home club, practicing for Eastern Sectionals. If she can make it from Lake Placid to Newark, Delaware, with plenty of time to compete, then I don't see why Emily Hughes can't do the same.

Berthesghost, thanks for writing the truth. We, too, saw Emily skate about one month ago and she was not at all impressive. Darn embarrassing, actually.

The bye window is normally 7 days for international competitions, so yes, Emily's Skate America assignment gives her a bye through Easterns next week.

Well, what other U. S. lady has impressed you so far this year? Ashley Wagner? Yes! But hardly anyone else as of yet! The rest of the top ladies seem to be struggling to find their way in this Olympic year. Two will make it! Emily just might be one of 'em!

Couldn't possibly have been as embarrassing as Liang at the Japan Open though, right?

Oh? Funny, I missed the half dozen media hypes participated in by Bebe herself, building up her GP event as the next step in her making the Oly team. Got any links?

If Em comes in 8th at SA, I don't find that embarrassing. It's pretty typical for her actually. But coming in 8th after having called in all of your media favors to hype you up as a contender? I hope for her sake that she really has improved by leaps and bounds in a few short weeks, cause if she skates like she did at regionals and it's broadcast on NBC after a lengthy fluff piece on her Oly comeback story, well I'm turning red at the idea of it.

I did get a chuckle though out of a recent thread where someone posted her TEB LP from last year and others said it was mean to post it.

I personally believe in letting the skating do the talking. That said, I liked what I saw on Icenetwork of Emily's new SP ("Caprice Bohèmien" by Rachmaninoff, choreographed by David Wilson) that she debuted at North Atlantic Regionals last month.

I know you were half-kidding, but anyway the reason for the bye is as much/more for the actually having to compete twice in a week as it is for the travel involved.

It's just lovely that you and berthes take such pleasure in whatever misfortunes befall Emily. Maybe someday you'll have career troubles and people can laugh at your problems on a public forum too.

Really, though, the venom on these boards from some posters (a few, not most) directed towards Sasha and Emily is astounding. It's as if their not skating at their highest level is somehow offending you personally. It's really gotten old. Skaters go to school, get injured, gain weight, get sick, move on to other priorities, just like the rest of us. They don't exist in a bubble where they are constantly required to perform at their peak condition for us. It's not Emily's fault she was selected for a GP last season and this one- that was the choice of USFS and/or ISU. Nobody forced them to choose her. If she feels that she's in good enough form to compete, then I think she has earned that right...maybe not based on recent results but by virtue of the fact that her skating at the last Olympics was superior to most of the performances put out by the US ladies last season. Chill out, she's just a skater competing at Skate America, for crissakes.

For what its worth, I watched her skates from Regionals and they were nothing to be ashamed of......pretty decent actually. Maybe not quite up to her old form yet but still good in the grand scheme of things. Good luck to her this weekend.

Emily may or not 'embarrass' herself. But in the context of US ladiezz, that's a low bar. (Or I guess, "high bar".. would be the correct way to state it..) Considering how day-to-day their consistency is (excepting Flatt..maybe..), results of 2-4 weeks ago hardly seems relevant.

There's a view out there that this is WHY she got this event. Bye from sectionals so now she is guranteed a spot regardless of her current skating skills.

The article mentions she hasn't competed since last November, but is very careful not to mention her performance or where she placed at that competition. That's the NYT for you --- all the news that the NYT sees fit to print.

Bebe is not being hyped for the Olympic Team by over the top articles. So I actually think it will be more embarrassing for Emily if she bombs.
