Goal difference keeping US alive at the moment - Germany 1 USA 0.

ETA: Ghana equalise so US still OK in 2nd place though if Ghana get a 2nd then all bets are off!!

I've never so much attention to coiffure. These men put figure skaters to shame! They really glam it up.

Definitely happier about Portugal than I was on Sunday. Knew that Germany would win but so pleased for the US!!!

Tim Howard is definitely my favorite.

Germany and Ghana were the two teams I was hoping to see advance, but happy for the USA as well.
Portugal joining the illustrious list of European flops here... (Spain, Italy, England)

I am not familiar with soccer'FIFA at all, so please excuse my dumb question.

USA lost but is still moving forward.

    Portugal won but is eliminated.

I am hearing/reading about goal difference, so ultimately what's more important is -how many goals a team scored rather than how many matches a team won?

    I am confused.

    No.

    A win = 3 points
    A draw = 1 point
    A loss = 0 points

The teams with the most points moves on, but in case of a tie they decide who moves on by goal difference. In others words the difference between how many goals the teams scored minus how many goals were scored against team. Portugal lost by 4-0 in their first game to Germany so had to not only win but win by a lot to over take the US's superior goal difference. I believe the US had a positive GD of 1 while Portugal had a negative GD of -3 so would have had to win by something like 5-0 to move on.

Wonders never cease. Russia is finally starting their best striker instead of benching him.

There are four teams in a group. In the group stage, each team plays each other, so they each play 3 matches, with the top two teams in each group advancing to the knockout rounds. A win is 3 points, a tie is one, and no point for a loss. If the teams are tied in number of points, the tie breakers in order are: goal difference (goals in favor - goals against), goals scored and head to head result.

USA and Portugal both had 4 points, but USA had a goal difference was 0 while Portugal's is - 3.

The runner up of this group will face Germany while the winner will face the US. If I were the Algerians, I would hope to finish 1st in my group and avoid Germany.

Belgium down to 10 men having Steven Defour sent off just before half time for a dangerous tackle. Going to be a long 2nd half for them now!!!

Russia's lack of discipline has cost them. Algeria just level it at 1-1!

Belgium has been completely underwhelming in this match, and frankly for the tournament. I expected much better with the players they have. I think USA has a decent shot to get to the QF.
