Assuming this is indeed true, and it really looks like it is
Llynn Rutherford tweeted it was announced in the press conference.

Is Bruno Massot really an OGM caliber skater? Even potentially.

What does it mean OMG caliber skater? As long as a guy is consistent with 2 different triple jumps and double axel, the rest of the elements appears to be 'easy' (for a guy who has already some experience in pairs). With a bit of good coaching and a very driven partner, anything is possible.

Is he consistent though. I have not see him skate much but he didn't look consistent at worlds this year.

Arent Volosozhar & Trankov planning on going to the 2018 Olympics too. So Savchenko & Massot would have to be even better than Savchenko & Szolkowy since S&S arent even good enough to beat V&T in competition (unless they mess up) anymore, and it is not like V&T will get worse. That is without even considering Stolbova & klimov and the other up and comers.

It may be wise to skate for France if Didier is the next ISU president .

If she wants to skate and Massot wants to skate with her, more power to them. Frankly, he's probably as consistent as Robin since it was Robin's mistakes that usually cost them points. She can drop the 3A attempt--it's just not worth the injury and it's harder to bounce back from injury the older you get (even in your 30s)--and go for it. More Steuer programs and more Savchenko is fine with me. And if Germany wont budge on the funding, their loss is France's gain. Moreover, S/M might be the incentive for V/T to return. It's more fun when you're competing against an equal.

True, they should skate for France. They will have way more politics behind them, the kind they will need against V&T and the powerful Russian fed. so they arent at a deficit before even hitting the ice. Germany has no political power at all anymore.

Exactly! In fact, a tiny part in me is wishing that they would do that! If you have something special and don't treat it right, one day you may find out that the special thing is gone! And it serves you right! After so many Worlds gold medals and 2 Olympic bronze, it is disgraceful that Steuer is not getting paid by Germany. I bet you if that was in Russia, he would be treated like a king!

So Steuer would move to France if they represent France? Where would they train.

I am thrilled we will still get to see Aliona compete If this was already decided I am surprised Massot competed this week, because if they skate for Germany they could have competed at Worlds next season - like Volosozhar skipped Worlds in 2010 so she could compete for Russia the next season. Or maybe they would rather take the whole year to gel before competing.

They can't compete at the next worlds as they both competed for respective countries at this worlds. This is definitely giving advantage to their competitors.

Not unless the schedule next year is really weird. But they can debut at the WTT, which is a great low-pressure opportunity to do so.

I'm sure Joubert would love to have them in Poitiers

If they want to be closer to Germany, there's no lack of options.

If they cant skate at the 2015 worlds they wont even be eligible for the fall 2015 grand prix, is that right?

No, as a "returning split couple" they are eligible for grand prix assignments. And if they skated for France they'd get a TEB host pick anyway.

It didn't hurt V/T to have to skip the GP series. Aliona must have one reason to do this and it's 2018. If she just wanted to skate, she and Robin could skate in shows and make A year of training without competing will make their competitors nervous, wondering what they've got in store, what type of program Steuer has put together, how competitive they are. Plus, a year gives them time to be very certain of what they have before they put it in front of a judging panel. They aren't kids. All three (Steuer, Savchenko and Massot) are seasoned adults who know exactly what they are doing and won't go public with programs they aren't certain can be skated well enough to get on the podium. Volo/Tran, especially Max, had one goal in mind and it was Olympic gold. Any other medals along the way were just bonus prizes. Aliona isn't skating for a 3rd bronze. She'll either be in gold medal contention or she'll call it quits before 2018. I love pairs and this will make an interesting quad.

"Split couple" actually: a "returning split couple" came in 7-12 at Worlds with the previous partner, a "split couple," 6-12.

Wikipedia lists March 23-29. The issue would be by what deadline S/M () would have to have been out of Pairs for a year.

I think rfisher is right: spend a year gelling and getting under everyone's skin. She could earn $$$ doing shows with Szolkowy in the meantime.

Their last competition for their respective countries was March 27. So unless we have a pairs event on Saturday and Sunday next year (March 28-29, 2015), that's a no go. But as I wrote earlier, if they gel together, I would not be surprised to see them making their debut at the WTT next April.

He expresses his desire to do just that here: http://video.lequipe.fr/video/tous-s...=680d7d173d8s& . (I hope he is serious.) After talking about doing some galas, he expresses that it would mean a complete restart ... Iliushechkina would be perfect. They could be ready just when Russia can no longer forbid a new citizenship!
