    Skate America 2014: CHICAGO(ish) - update 3/25/14

A friend asked me if I knew where Skate America was going to be this fall because he couldn't find any information online, and I couldn't find an announcement either -- just the bid package on the USFSA web site that said the announcement was going to be made last October.

Anybody know what is going on? Did they fail to get any bids? Is there something like lack of TV contract, dispute with ISU, etc holding up the arrangements?

It hasn't been announced until much later than this the last few years.
Congratulations 2014 World Ice Dance Champions Anna Cappellini & Luca Lanotte!!!

I've been wondering where it's going to be held also, because I'm convinced (with no evidence) that both Jason Brown and Gracie Gold will be competing there, and if they are, I'll be sorely tempted to attend.

Hmmm, OK -- shows how much attention I've been paying to GP events the past few years. (Me, I'm still boycotting ISU events with sekret judging!) It just seemed weird that the only information about the event my friend or I could find was that it was supposed to have been already announced months ago.

Did you read the bid package?

That may be the issue. They seem to want a LOT for what little a location gets out of this event. I can't see why many places are that interested.

It is never going to happen, but Chicago would be a great market for the 2 stars from Illinois. A way to develop figure skating in that area.

Skate America typicality will have the top US skaters at it. So I'm pretty sure that would include Gracie, Jason. If Davis and White retire then C&B would be next inline.

Both trained in the 'burbs rather than Chicago proper, and I would have to think there are probably some smaller arenas in the Chicago area (Sears Center?) that might be suitable for something like SKAM.

After Kansas City got passed over for Nationals two years in a row, I hoped maybe they would throw in a bid this event. Downtown KC has actually had a pretty great renaissance in the last decade, so it isn't as dreary of a destination as it might sound.
I meant to take the high road.... but I missed the exit.

OMG! Please let SA go to Chicago or a suburb. It would be so amazing to get to go to a GP and I can get to Chicago!

(I'd be up for Kansas City or Minneapolis too.)

I have some friends in the greater KC area (including one who used to come to comps when she lived in Seattle!), so I'd be down with a KC Skate America
Q: Why can't I read the competition threads?
A: Competition forums on the board are available to those with a Season Pass or a premium membership How to View Kiss & Cry

The Sears Center has hosted the US Classic (the main domestic competiton other than Nationals) for gymnastics for the past 2 years and will do so again this year. I could see it being a good venue but its a pain to get to from the city without a car for visitors.

Hartford also hosted gymnastics Nationals last year and in 2010 and was a great, relatively newish venue with a Hilton attached. While I'm not sure USFS wants to go East Coast, its an easy, easy trip from Boston and NYC and they could get a decent size SCoB contingent with C/S competing (as I assume they're getting SA) and a SCoNY contingent if Cesario was to get a spot. The City seemed to be a good fit size-wise with the USAG events, eager to host again and I could certainly see them bidding on SA.

I went to SA in Hartford in 2006 and loved the setup of the hotel connected to the arena. The arena was a bit dated then, though. Has it been renovated?

I didn't realize they had already hosted SA. And you're right- the Hartford arena is older. I was confusing it with the CONSOL center in Pittsburgh, which is new and beautiful. The Hartford connecting hotel-arena set-up is fabulous though. You can go right from competition to hotel bar in a matter of minutes . It almost made up for Starbucks being closed on the weekend.

Oh man, there would be some unhappy campers if the Starbucks was closed on the weekend during SA. The most popular place in any official hotel at a skating event is the Starbucks.

There are worse places to eat... Actually I only vaguely remember it, so it couldn't have been too bad.
