Yeah, I had the same thought! Although that would mean the team medalists were excluded? But yeah, they were with members of the women's hockey team and the bobsled team, and I think I maybe saw Kim Lamarre in the corner of one photo? Also there was a Slovenian athlete next to that group, so I wonder if it's a Olympic allocation rather than the federation.

What time does the figure skating gala start tomorrow? The Sochi website is being woefully unhelpful.

Also not really related but LOL Patrick:

I was also wondering how they got to see the curling, hockey etc. Is there a certain area for Olympic medallists or athletes and whoever wants to go can show up? Interested to know how they do this.

There's definitely a ticket allocation for Olympic athletes (I think it usually is a specific area/set of areas, but that depends on the venue), although I'm not sure exactly how it's arranged. I know it's often allocated to federations, who then sometimes might separately allocate it to different disciplines, but it could also be directly through the federations to the athletes or even possibly directly through the Olympic organizers. I'd imagine there might also be a way for athletes to get in at the doors if the allocated Olympic seats aren't in demand (ex: if no Finnish athletes claim their federation's quota for the Canada-USA semifinal), but I'm not sure.

Upon re-reading, that's very unhelpful but as far as I can tell, this is arranged differently for every Olympics. If the allocation is made directly to the federation, it's also going to depend on the federation-- for example, a federation may allow any athlete who's interested in attending an event to take from the federation's quota, or they could prioritize medalists, or they could divide the tickets to the subdisciplines (ie, in London 2012, USA gymnasts I believe were only offered tickets to certain events)

I know when you get there, you can sign up for different events. Which is also unhelpful because I'm sure 99% of athletes signed up for hockey games.

I mean, why not. You'd probably get the same weather as Sochi right now.

I don't visit FSU when the Olympics are on (it is just too crazy), so I'll say it now that the figure skating part is over: Tessa and Scott, those were two stunning performances. Thank-you.

V/M will skate to the Russian love song "Shine, Shine My Star" for their ex.

Here's an interpretation of the song by Anna German

    Umm...

If the version I'm listening to on Youtube is correct, I hope they skate to one without the vocals?

When did they even have time to choreograph and practice a new exhibition piece? Do they think people in Russia don't know who Rihanna is, LOL

Oh my god. Please no. I hope they only skate this here and not SOI. I guess some people might like it though.

Wasn't as bad as I thought the third time I listened to it. I think.

I am glad the womens figure skating competition is since this exposes beyond any doubt whatsoever the entire figure skating competition at these Games was fixed, and now we know exactly why the stunning skates by V&M did not win. It had nothing to do with their skating, they never had a hope to begin with, but they sure skated like the champions and legends they are.

Honestly, the more I listen to that piece, the more I love it. It is a russian classic, so I think the audiences will eat it up!

The music does have a very rich history. Apparently it was obliterated for a while post WWI but then popularised again thanks to the movie War and Peace starring Audrey Hepburn!

Youtube also has a video of Oksana Baiul performing to it (from when?), so I think they're in good hands with this piece. I'm expecting it to turn out a little like their Umbrellas of Cherbourg program actually.

I prefer the Origa version to Anna German's, I must say.

This Shine My Star song is doing NOTHING for me. It reminds me of generic Andrea Bocelli schmaltz. The Anna German version is slightly better, but only just.

Are Meryl and Charlie being forced by Marina to skate to a Russian dirge, as well?

Yeah, why pick a Russian classic to skate in Russia? It doesn't make sense!
