    Poised to breakthrough but didn't

This was on another forum, and I thought it would be interesting to discuss.

Who are some skaters who looked like they were poised to break through to the top but never did, and why?

    Some examples for me:
Emanuel Sandhu, believed to be "The Next One" after Elvis Stojko retired, but was notoriously inconsistent and ran hot and cold. He did finish as high as fifth in 2006 Worlds, then fell to sixteenth in 2007.
Cynthia Phaneuf, looked like she'd be a major contender, but a growthspurt and injuries derailed her and she was never able to find that consistency.
Yukari Nakano and Yukina Ota: Buried in a deep Japanese field.

Hm...kind of a grim topic but Caroline Zhang and Mirai Nagasu immediately come to mind. Both had trouble dealing with newly matured bodies, but I think issues of emotional/competitive grit and motivation played a large part as well.

Yeah, a bit "grim". Zhang and Nagasu are both examples. Zhang's technique also was a problem.

What about Silverstein/Pekarek? They were touted as the best up and coming ice dancers, with so much potential, and then they split.

Yukina Ota had a career-ending injury IIRC.

Chantal Lefebvre and Arseni Markov were an ice dance couple that I thought had been set up for ice dance dominance...but it just never seemed to work. I guess I didn't follow skating well enough to know why they never took off as a power couple. Wikipedia says that began careers in coaching and choreography after they retired as skaters. But I haven't heard a peep from either of them since then.

Yeah, Silverstein/Pekarak just vanished, too bad. I don't know if I would have Sasha on here, she did win medals, just not any golds. Chantal and Arseni did show promise, I think largely they were overtaken by Virtue/Moir.

Yeah, I think Yukina did have injury problems.

Yup. So much was expected of her. She delivered a lot but didn't begin to meet the Great Expectations.

Still an all time great (artistically), but should've at least won a world championship imo to cement her competitive legacy. But she has that Olympic silver so

Nicole Bobek is probably the most heartbreaking.

Nicole had so much talent but just lacked the discipline. It was too bad.

Sasha didn't reach what some expected but she totally broke through. She has 3 world medals, a GPF win and won an Olympic silver medal. I totally don't think she belongs in this thread but one of these days people will learn to add how one competes into the equation to determine expectation. Sasha has a lot of short program wins but the LP was her weak link.

Well, I was a greedy uber and wanted her to win everything!

    Had Adam retired now?

Also Rachel Flatt (just fizzled it seems) and Alissa Czisny (nerves and injuries). Tomas Verner, Jeremy Abbott

Yeah. What exactly happened with Julia? Was she derailed by puberty? Injuries?
Sydne I think just got lost in a deep field of American women. Naomi had injuries.

Not sure. But she was certainly great in 1997, whipping through 6 triples at Worlds in Lausanne.
