Another senseless death. I am so sad. Such a gifted actor, with so much ahead of him.

@$&*!!!!! Just can't believe it. Loved him as an actor ever since I saw him in "Happiness," and I thought and hoped that he had his addiction under control.

I loved him in 'Capote' and just about every movie I saw him in. I had no idea he was battling addiction.

From all the reports I've been reading, he had been sober for 23 years and admitted to "falling off the wagon" sometime last year. That is so tragic- to be able to stay sober for so long and then one slip puts you back on a path that ultimately ends like this...

    WHAT??!!???!!

This is weird. I just watched The Caine Mutiny earlier in the day, and was so impressed by Humphrey Bogart's versatility . It made me think of which male actor today is as versatile, and I thought Sean Penn and Philip Seymour Hoffman. To now hear this!! I wasn't even aware of his drug/alcohol addiction.

Liv and CNN had it right...This does feel like a robbery, as there was more talent in Phillip Seymour Hoffman's little finger than the entire body of most "stars" of today and now we'll never know what he would have gifted us w/next. I still don't quite believe this and am still in shock.

One of my favourite actors of all time. May he finally be at peace.

Totally shocked at the news. I'm somewhat pissed. Never knew he had an addiction problem.

    RIP.

Unfortunate. An interesting actor. I always felt he was a supporting actor and someone that could make something of some rather small roles. But I won't be nostalgically pretending he was one of the most ambitiuous actors around. What does that even mean?

I don't see where anyone in this thread said that he was one of the most 'ambitious' actors around. 'Brilliant' has been thrown out a few times, though.

As a character actor, he was brilliant.

    CNN article:

    http://www.cnn.com/2014/02/02/showbi...html?hpt=hp_c2

He had kicked the drug habit for 23 years, but somehow got back into it.

Dead on the bathroom floor with a needle stuck in his arm. What a crappy, pathetic way to die.

Having said that, I thought he was beyond fabulous in Capote. Absolutely brilliant.

Very tragic news. I always enjoyed his work in films. Unfortunately, as soon as I read reports that he was a heroin user I figured he was heading down a very dark road like most heroin addicts who don't get help in time. RIP.
