Linnea Dale is just wonderful. Based on what I heard in the first two semis, I still want her or Carl Espen to win. Mo did beat her in the first semi though. He's fun but he's not a very good singer and think that if he won, he'd end up like Tooji and place very poorly at Eurovision.

Gonna catch up on the Portuguese semi-final now.

    Portugal - Festival da Canção 2014 Semi-Final

What is very interesting about Festival da Canção is how proud the Portuguese are of their own culture. Once again, all of the songs are in the national language and are based on traditional music. It's very much frozen in time. This will most likely result in whatever wins not getting out of its semi, though.

    1. Catarina Pereira "Mea Culpa"

This was co-written by Andrej Babic, the author of "Molitva." Turbo folk trash. Fun and upbeat I guess but .

    2. Ivo Lucas "Eu Vou"

Cute boy strumming on his guitar. They found him busking on the street?

    3. Zana "Nas Asas da Sorte"

Joan Rivers levels of plastic surgery detected. Redneck wedding alert (it's the accordion). Quite DRAMATIK vocal performance though.

    4. Carla Ribeiro "Mais para dar"

Finally something that sounds vaguely modern. Pretty decently sang as well.

    5. Ricardo Afonso "Emoção"

Very strained vocals. Trying way too hard.

    6. Rui Andrade "Ao Teu Encontro"

A cute gay boy singing a generic ballad.

    7. Lara Afonso "O Teu Segredo"

The verses were very intriguing but the 'flower power' chorus seemed out of a different song entirely. Still, more sophisticated than most trash here.

    8. Raquel Guerra "Sonhos Roubados"

So DRAMATIK. I don't think anybody had ever taught her about contrast and pacing. It was totally over-the-top from the first line, reaching self-parody levels.

    9. Madalena Trabuco "Coração de Filigrana"

Awful vocals! I don't think I've ever heard anybody mess up this bad during a live performance yet. Cliché Disney ballad.

    10. Suzy "Quero Ser Tua"

Trashy, poorly sang but at least upbeat I guess.

I would have ranked them (the actual five qualifiers in bold):

    1. Lara Afonso - O Teu Segredo (João Matos & Miguel Ferrador)
    2. Carla Ribeiro - Mais Para Dar (Marina Ferraz & Hélder Godinho)
    3. Zana - Nas Asas da Sorte (Paulo Abreu Lima e Jan Van Dijck)
    4. Catarina Pereira - Mea Culpa (Andrej Babic & Carlos Coelho)
    5. Raquel Guerra - Sonhos Roubados (Nuno Marques da Silva & Nuno Feist)
    ---
    6. Ricardo Afonso - Emoção (Ricardo Afonso, Luís Fernando & Rui Fingers)
    7. Rui Andrade - Ao Teu Encontro (Rui Andrade & Marc Paelinck)
    8. Susy - Quero Ser Tua (Como A Lua É Do Luar) (Emanuel)
    9. Ivo Lucas - Eu Vou (João Só)
    10. Madalena Trabuco - Coração de Filigrana (TóZé Santos)

"Molitva" (as in 2007 Eurovision winner) wasn't written by Andrej Babic.
To think that fun is simple fun, while earnest things are earnest, proves all too plain that neither one thou truthfully discernest.

Third and last Melodi Grand Prix Semi-Final is over.

Carl Espen has brought me to tears. It was a beautifully restrained, yet powerful performance, with good use of pacing building a narrative. As much as I love Linnea Dales, this has to win MGP. And it could win Eurovision as well, provided the jurors and the viewers have enough musical sensitivity (I guess that's very questionable ). A stunning stunning track performed extremely well live.

Moi's "Bensin" was a pretty sophisticated electropop track. I would have definitely put her through (in second place) but then it was a bit flat and not really made with a live performance in mind.

Everybody else was awful to varying degrees.

El Cuero showed some dad rock. It was decently crafted and well enough executed but there was nothing interesting, no creative spark.

Elisabeth Carew's vocals were extremely shaky and it's like she presented every single 'empowerment' cliché.

Ilebek was just embarrassingly bad. A bizarre tone of voice reminiscent of a horse neighing and a very mediocre track.

You're right. I confused him with Vladimir Graić.

The head of Macedonian delegation has confirmed that Tijana Dapčević will be performing in English. Great decision, I think that the English version sounds much better. I hope she can manage to make it through to the final.

Montenegrin entry has been presented today: Sergej Ćetković "Moj Svijet".

I am finding it a bit lukewarm. It's decent and safe enough to possibly qualify though (and that would be a first). He has also recorded an English version ("My Love") and has not yet decided which one he is going to perform in Copenhagen.

Oh, the level of Portuguese songs was just abysmal. Suzy and Madalena Trabuco .
For me it's either Raquel Guerra (even though the level of drama is just ludicrous) or Rui Andrade (the song is nothing to write home about, the lyrics are so DRAMATIK that it's funny, the whole concept is so 1990s, but at least he's got a nice powerful voice and the looks ).

    Sergej Cetkovic .

I've listened to live versions of all Norwegian songs and I must say Carl Espen disappointed me a bit. But I still keep my fingers crossed for his success. Even though I'd rather see Linnea in Copenhagen.
    Otoh, Moi .

Greece has made the right choice: Freaky Fortune feat. Riskykidd "Rise Up"

Tonight there was also the Moldovan Semi-Final. 8 out of 12 songs went through which is a bit bizarre. Another semi-final is on Thursday so there will be 16 songs total in the final, which is a bit much.

I've decided to watch the last three Junior Pairs teams later and switched to Unser Song für Dänemark.

Das Gezeichnete Ich so far has managed to miss almost every single note. What a disaster!

    Unheilig will win anyway.

I quite liked Oceana, but she deserved a better song

    Santiano is really catchy.
Has there ever been a ship on stage at Eurovision?

Oceana did a decent job, showed strong vocals but yeah that song is basically 6/10 at best.

Santiano. Redneck wedding vibes. I am worried they are going to win. :/

I would like MarieMarie or Madeline Juno to win. Everything else is trash, more or less.

"Cotton Candy Hurricane" was lovely indeed. Quirky modern pop music.

And now we have The Baseballs which sound like some kind of high school performance. Their retro act got boring really quickly.

I appreciate Elaiza's retro sound but it was just way too flat for me.

Unheilig now. They are really the favourites to win? Nobody is going to vote for this at Eurovision. They are doing the kind of very German music that people outside of that culture will just not connect to.

The host is really terrible by the way. She tries to be funny and amusing but fails miserably.

Unheilig is the very popular, unfortunately. I don't get it . You are rigth, they will fail misearbly in Copenhagen.

Barbara Schöneberger (the host) is usually quite good, I just tune her out. That is why I prefer to watch shows from countries where I don't know the language.

Not the strongest live performance from Madeline Juno unfortunately. A shame because she is also really quirky and it's a decent track.

Santiano, MarieMarie, Unheilig and Elaiza (!!!) through to the semi-final. Surprising results.

Unfortunately, it's a pretty safe bet that Santiano and Unheilig will end up being the top two.

Santiano's second song was in German. Not as catchy as the first.

MarieMarie's second song is nowhere near as good as the first either, IMO.
