There's quite a big skating community in Kelowna too which means lots of available volunteers. The big rinks in Vancouver (Rogers Arena, Coliseum) are probably a little too big. There's other places with appropriate venues but then you're out in the suburbs which isn't all that attractive and may not have the volunteers.

Vancouver wouldn't be chosen for the same reasons Toronto and Montreal aren't but Missassauga and Quebec City are: monster, expensive rinks with NHL and/or big concerts vying for the venues. Even events in "Seattle" aren't held in Seattle: Skate America has been in Everett and Kent, without efficient and reliable public transport from the city to either.
Kelowna is a nice-sized city, with wineries nearby (and golfing in the summer), and is a reasonable long-distance drive from Vancouver and should draw a city crowd.

Wheeeeeeeee! Gotta get my ducks in a row to do a seat buy Friday at 10am. I hope that selectyourtickets.com allows us to select exact seats rather than doing one of those "let us choose the best tickets for you" roulette games.
Kelowna was chosen because it meets two key requirements for Skate Canada: a giant downtown mall, and a casino

I feel the need to pout over the fact that this is Halloween weekend. Driving distance for me, but with young kiddos I won't be able to skip Halloween
SC is almost always Hallowe'en weekend. Some of the skaters take account of this in their exhibition numbers.
It's OK if Hallowe'en falls mid-week, but otherwise it is hard for people with kids who want to Trick or Treat. OTOH, it's a good excuse for the audience to exchange candy.
Must book my flight soon. I hope to fly on AC points.
So looking forward to seeing everyone again
Aargh! AC has Oct 30 and Nov 3 blacked out!! Goodbye free flight!
i think i might go up and volunteer- any info on that yet? if i go then i would have space in the car as well =)
Yes, a couple of hours at the Windsor casino, and we saw pretty much every Skate Canada athlete and coach. I would bet it will be the same in Kelowna.
I booked a room at the Delta, and I booked a room for Skate America because I can't decide. Porter flies from Sudbury to Chicago, and is half the cost of Sudbury to Kelowna. Skate America tickets are much more expensive, though, yes?
I can't decide which one to attend...and I have to do it by tomorrow at 10:00.
Voidy Swan, Dirty Carmen, Perverted Moonlight Sonata. God I love figure skating!
