Anastasia Gubanova - Free Skating (2012 Crystal Skate)
I will never forget the first time I have seen a video of Elena Radionova from some local competition. She was eleven years old and it was an FS where she landed 3toe, 3salchow and 3loop, skating with incredible confidence for somebody that young. 3 years on, Radionova is a Junior World Champion and she's giving experienced senior skaters a run for their money, and now we have another incredibly talented young skater to be amazed by.
Anastasia Gubanova is 10-years old and she has just competed in Novice Ladies at 2013 Warsaw Cup (links to videos above).
The fact that a 10-year old is landing 3flip/2toe and a 3loop is absolutely mindblowing but it's not just what jumps she lands, it's how she does it and there's more to her skating than just the big tricks.
When young girls are landing triple jumps, the problem often is that their technique is terrible. The take-offs are forced, there is hardly any elevation, the jumps are cheated. You know the drill. And then when the skater grows up, the jumps are gone. Caroline Zhang being a very good example of this.
This does not appear to be the case with Gubanova. For somebody this tiny, the amount of elevation she gets on the jumps is very impressive. She also gets very good position in the air and there doesn't seem to be any doubt that her rotation is getting completed.
Jumps aside, her edges are deep and she skates with good flow throughout. I have never seen basic skating quality this strong from a skater that young.
And finally, her movement is very elegant and refined. She has clearly had a lot of ballet training from a very early age. Again, this kind of maturity from somebody this young is nothing short of remarkable.
I am absolutely amazed.
Any Russian posters that have seen her at some local competition and perhaps have more information about her?
