Tara Lipinski to sit as a judge at Miss Universe 2013 in Moscow, November 9th

    Miss Universe 2013 Telecast Judges

Prior to her, figure skaters who sat as judges were

Peggy Flemming - 1974; Manila, Philippines
Roslyn Sumners - 1989; Cancun, Mexico
Elvis Stojko - 1998; Honolulu, Hawaii
Michelle Kwan - 2007; Mexico City, Mexico
Evan Lysacek - 2010; Las Vegas, Nevada

Tara also sat as a judge at the 1998 Miss Teen USA pageant in Shreveport, Louisiana won by South Carolina's Vanessa Minnillo

Wasn't Johnny Weir also a judge...or was that Miss USA?

Of course, this is all a tie-in to NBC's Olympic coverage - part of the six-month commercial prior to the games - but it's still nice. The word "Sochi" will be mentioned many times during the Nov 9 telecast, even though the pageant is in Moscow.

at the idea of Stephen Tyler and Tara Lipinski working together. Maybe she can sit on his lap so she can see over the top of the desk....
We live in an ageist society where everything is based on youth, but I hated being 18. I don't like teenagers any more now than I did then. I'm 49 now and there is no way that I'd go back to my teens and 20s - even if I knew what I know now, I don't want to go through all that again. I found it a very difficult time. - Buzz Osborne of the Melvins

By the way, for the first time since ???? (ever?), the Miss Universe telecast is going to be shown delayed by 9 hours in the USA. The real event begins at 12 noon EST and ends at 2PM EST - 11PM Moscow time. My pageant-crazy friends from Puerto Rico are looking for live viewing alternatives, which I can post here as they come to light.

The Spanish-language version of TLC cable is said to be planning to show the event in real time here in the US, beginning at 12 noon. There will undoubtedly be 'pirate internet options' too (just as figure skating fans do).

Good for Tara! Another reason to watch. Although to be honest, I am not sure I like her taste, judging by her house decor, at least.

Is there anything more recent than that Joy Philbin video from 2000-ish?

I saw her house on a house decor show, it also had Brian Boitano (whose taste in home decorating is way better, btw). I am sure we had a thread on this at some point.

I wonder what will happen if Miss Universe Canada 2011 participant Michelle Kwan competes in the pageant.

I doubt we'll see any mention of Sochi at all. But we'll see.

Johnny was a judge at Miss USA 2010.

I believe that TVTeka subscribers -- which are many of us skating fans -- will be able to see the live Miss Universe finals on one of the main Russian TV channels. TVTeka saves the day, yet again.

TvTeka/Russian Channel 1 has decided to delay it too...by one hour, so it begins at 11PM Moscow time on TV1, while the live show begins at 10PM Moscow time. This link is supposed to work, to see Miss Universe live:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6mh6gx7oL4

It begins in 50 minutes or so - 1PM EST in the USA.

During the judges interview, did I hear the hostess call her "Lara" instead of Tara?

Tara/Lara did her job well. She was announced as part of the NBC Sochi-2014 telecast team, during the presentation of judges. (Hoorah! Tara in Sochi, along with Johnny Weir!) A beautiful Miss Venezuela won! Pageant fanatics from Philippines & Pto Rico can't be disappointed, either.

My live internet feed from Venevision worked like a dream, so I was able to go out on the town with friends last night & avoid NBC's fake 'almost live' telecast.

Oh, and what the heck was Miss USA wearing as her country costume? Was that really a Transformers costume? How the heck does that represent the USA?

Is there a country costume for USA though? It's kind of an unfair category...
She could have just worn jeans, t-shirt, and flip flops...
