    Myers-Briggs analysis of America

Here's a study described in second hand by Richard Florida, one of my favorite sociologists and a big proponent of the "creative economy." Midwesterners are friendly but conventional, West Coasters are relaxed and creative, and Northeasterners are temperamental, uninhibited, and just darn neurotic.

The study draws on a wide body of data and information collected from five separate internet survey samples over 12 years, covering 1.5 million individuals across the 48 contiguous states. The primary objective of the study, according to the researchers, was to map the "psychological topography of the United States," composed of "geographically coherent psychological regions." To do so, they used a statistical technique known as "cluster analysis" to examine how five major personality traits – openness, conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness and neuroticism – are distributed and cluster across American states and regions.

The study identifies three main regional types: friendly and conventional, relaxed and creative, and temperamental and uninhibited. The maps below, from the study, show how these line up across America's states.

"reserved, aloof, impulsive, irritable, and inquisitive," while also being "passionate, competitive, and liberal."

Schmuck was reading my Myers-Briggs test!

At least I live in the right area of the country for my type, not that I didn't know that already.

The research didn't look at the Myers-Briggs typology
Sometimes I think I lost something really important to me, and it turns out I already ate it.

Isn't this "Big Five" personality traits instead of Myers-Briggs? Either way, birds of a feather do flock together...and crazy seems to attract crazy

Which State Fits Your General Mood?

On Time.com, you can take a quiz regarding how extroverted/introverted, grumpy, etc. you are, and it'll match you up with the ideal US state (including DC) for you:

    http://news.yahoo.com/what-state-fit...231459081.html

    I got DC.
And so, dear Lord, it is with deep sadness that we turn over to you this young woman, whose dream to ride on a giant swan resulted in her death. Maybe it is your way of telling us... to buy American.

I got West Virginia, which is right next to Ohio, where I live. I've been there once, just across the river to Parkersburg, so I could say I've been to another state (got a t-shirt to prove it).

Apparently I should have Georgia on my mind. I did take a vacation to Atlanta in the 90's once...

I got a beachfront home in Liguria.

Making up the results was more fun than taking the test.

I got Washington - not that there's any chance of me getting my home state since the study omits Hawai'i and Alaska :

If you leave everything in the middle you get Texas.
I took the test and got Florida. I took the ocean test it is based on and found the analysis pretty useless.

I also got Georgia. Peter, I guess we'd get along pretty well together over there!

I got New Mexico...and I did live in Ranchos de Taos in the late 90s. But I liked Massachusetts the most, and am hoping to move back there within the next year.

Oregon! It's one of the few states I haven't visited yet.
