I guess it was easy to be friends when the rivalry didn't really exist yet. Still, don't know how the change makes V/M look.
Who says it was V/M that changed the terms of that " friendship " ? Maybe Meryl and Charlie were the ones who thought it was necessary to distance themselves from V/M to make a progress. When you look at earlier interviews it were mostly V/M that praised Charlie and Meryl and talked about the friendship while Charlie and especially Meryl often seemed very dismissive and hardly said a nice word about V/M's skating skills except for the obligatory " they are very talented ".
I wouldn't put all the blame on V/M here.

Well, I don't think the teams are obligated to be friends and TBQH it makes me dislike Scott less if his douch-ey comments weren't directed at people he considers friends.

I mean it's really cute in theory. Two teams about the same age who both have life long partnerships and pal around like BFFs raising the level of ice dance with their rivalry.

It's just as romanticized as the idea that each couple will run off into the sunset and have a bunch of skating babies. Reality isn't like that and you can't expect that from people in a high stress situation. It doesn't really matter who started it, if there was any one incident that did. Also Meryl and Charlie, and Tessa and Scott have very different personalities. Charlie might be an extrovert compared to Meryl, but they're a lot more similar to one another than they are to Tessa and Scott.

Meh, it's all just speculation. I have no idea what Meryl said or didn't say, but the famous eyeroll of disgust when DomShabs placed higher than V/M in the CD in Vancouver and the interview interrupting hug after the FD spoke loudly of a friendship.

Didn't Charlie say when it was all over it would be fine? I think that's probably right.

I just think it's all drummed up nonsense. I don't sense any animosity. I don't sense any friendship either. Just two teams who happen to share a coach and a rink.

If I could have danced All Night were a waltz, they could get a -2 penalty. But it isn't.
Here's the sheet music. No 3/4 time signature.
    http://www.musicnotes.com/images/pro.../MN0044077.gif

If they are dancing off the beat, they could get low timing PCS scores.

If they had used a waltz for the Finnstep, it would be completely not legal, both Finnstep sequences would be level 1 or B (I forget which way the nomenclature runs, and there's a 2 point deduction as well.

However, you can use any piece of music that has the correct time signature coupled with the correct number of beats per second, even if it doesn't sound to your ear like a quickstep for the Finnstep. This is why it's legal to use a Charleston to dance a quickstep. The time signature is right, and the number of beats per second is right.

If a team is penalized for something wrong, they can appeal. It's easy to prove how many beats per minute, and what the time signature is.

However, if the judges decide their SD is somehow inappropriate, but not worth penalizing, it could downgrade some of the their PCS scores.

Or not. T&D used to get all kinds of waivers on rules when others didn't until 1994. Sometimes your string of luck runs out.
Great post! People always assume that wearing a tux = waltz

If there is any animosity, I believe that Scott is the root of it. Before 2012 season, M/C and V/M "seemed" like "real" friends. Watch this clip here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNrABXObKps As you can see, Scott hugs Meryl, Charlie hugs Tessa, they all joke and play, etc. Scott and Tessa seemed proud of D/W TBH.

But...the following season the tables turned. Apparently, D/W weren't "artistically" greater than V/M, said Moir. Obviously he was upset that M/C were on the path to another world medal (don't get me started about his whining and crying that season ugh), but his choice of words weren't the nicest towards his "friends". I also saw Tessa seemingly mock Meryl and Charlie at a gala practice.

Btw I remember that clip of Meryl rolling her eyes at the Russian team.
Of course I could be wrong, but I don't blame M/C distancing themselves from V/M.

Thanks Doris for posting about the time signature. As a musician myself I've been meaning to say that even it if looks "waltzy", it isn't 3/4 time and therefore not a waltz. I do have to say that I would prefer music only in this SD. The vocals just don't seem to add anything. Its not bad but when they go into the Finnstep it just seems to flow in a true ballroom style.

To be fair, this "Scheherazade" program is their most artistic program/ dance yet. In fact, it's damn near a masterpiece, if it wasn't already at NHK.

Believe me, Davis and White fans, even the Soviets will bow down to them after they finished this "Scheherazade" at Sochi. I'm not a huge Davis and White fan, but even the most anti-Davis&White asshole cannot deny this particular program.

The children asked better questions than professional journalists...it's a shame really. Adorable, but not a good sign for journalists.

Lots of great questions that were asked. I really enjoyed it. Journalists, take note!

Yeah, they're not relatable at all.

This is so fun for all the kids. Think how excited they're going to be when the Olympics are on TV!

Not really. Just didn't want to sound like a total sycophant, that's all.
