Oksana has had many fiances over the years, but none have morphed into husbands.

I am skeptical of this man, but perhaps there is truth to this lawsuit which will come out in court. I hope for Oksana that she gets all the money that she earned (and that this new man doesn't take it.)

It's no wonder she has problems with trust. She grew up not knowing her father, her entire family (mother, grandparents) was died between 1988 and 1991. She ended up living with her coach's wife (he had moved to Canada) and was subsequently passed on to Galina Smievskaya. After she finally reunited with her father, he died three years later.

That could leave you feeling vulnerable and insecure.

At the time, the media made it appear as if Oksana was living with Galina. (IIRC, Viktor and his wife lived nearby.) Later, I read that Oksana actually lived by herself. But my mind is fuzzy on the details because it has been almost twenty years.

It really wouldn't surprise me if people were screwing Oksana out of her money. It happens all the time to Hollywood kids. Gary Coleman was the most egregious example, but I can name many, many others. In most of those cases, the kids' own parents were among the culprits. If some people are capable of doing that to their own kids, it doesn't take much imagination to see how other people would have no qualms about taking money from someone else's child, especially a recent immigrant who doesn't speak the language or know the culture and who has no one to protect her.

While I agree that it's probable she was screwed out of some money, I find the claims of the suit to be a bit OTT. This claim that SAG didn't credit her properly for roles so that she could be paid properly seems particularly specious as an example.

Yeah, those sum$ are rather large. That's the kind of money I'd expect to see for one of the Rolling Stones, not for a figure skater.

I really don't remember seeing her do much from '98 on. A few shows, but she was just in them. So really how much $$$ did she make skating in COI for 5 or 6 years. COI had a lot of skaters could they have made millions a year? She's saying millions were stolen from her and I'm just shocked that she made that much. She did have a tragic life, but she also was one lucky girl.

She could have made quite a bit, just from COI -- she was a pro during the "post-whack boom". According to a book about COI, at that time, they would be doing 70+ shows a season in non-Oly years.

The top skaters during the boom were earning seven-figure incomes from COI. There were also various pro competitions, ice shows, and novelty events like Too Hot to Skate. Oksana was in virtually all of these, which meant she was on TV nearly every week. There was also the Nutcracker Tour and video, the two books Oksana wrote, various TV appearances, etc. I'm sure I am not remembering it all. I once tried to describe the skating boom to my teenage niece, and she couldn't believe that skaters used to be A-list celebrities. But they were. When Oksana started having problems, it was in the tabloids, on all the TV entertainment shows, and even in the mainstream news media. That just wouldn't happen if a skater got into trouble today-- not in this country, anyhow.

I just remembered... For awhile COI had *two* tours, the major spring/summer tour and a shorter winter tour. Oksana did both of these.

That's what I meant by bizarre.. it's kind of a 'scatter shot' approach it seems like. Are they thinking "sue everyone we can possibly think of and maybe someone will just give us cash to go away"? One of my old bosses used to say "if one person is screwing you it's probably true, if everyone you meet is screwing you, it might be time to take a look in a mirror"

As for her money while she made a lot she also had a lifestyle that spent a lot. Fancy cars, living in high priced areas, lawyers for her DUI, ice time etc.... It's hard to say just based on the lawsuits what might have happened. A lot of these skaters lived as if the money would always flow.. Heck they still do. Just last year there were posts on how broke Weir was and yet we all recall the "shopping" trips from the Olympic years etc...

When did COI fold? I can see her making a lot of money for 5 years or so (am a bit surprised at the 7 figure amount, unless it was Kwan or a few others), but that was 13 years ago. These law suits drive me crazy, if you think you've been wronged be reasonable. She may need help, but she's looking in all the wrong places.

I can believe she made 17 million over that time and that she was ripped off of some of it. But not that she was ripped off of 17 million in total.

I'd say that was typical legal bartering: I sue you for ridiculous amount of money X, so you can haggle down and we then find an agreement at lower amount Y. Hardly anyone who files that kind of suit actually expects to get the full amount.
    Touching the void.

According to the complaint, Olympic Champions Ltd. is an entity set up by Galina Smievskaya, Victor and Nina Petrenko. She's named Galina, Victor, and Nina individually as well.

If you go on the New York Supreme Court (NYS highest trial court) website and search for Baiul, you can see the complaint and exhibits.

Rob, could you provide the link - I'm looking for the right one but not getting anything that leads me to the complaint. Thanks.

    Added - I found it.

Oh my, she has sued everyone and their brother (31 separate complaints) - my dad used to say "throw enough rocks in the pond and eventually you'll hit a fish" and that's what I suspect this is, a fishing trip. I would presume (and I know nothing) that her side thinks that if they sue a long list of people for absurd amounts of money they will eventually get enough in 'go away' settlements to fund her life.

If she is honestly entitled to some money, she should get it. If, on the other hand, this is an all-out assault on every producer/agent/advisor, etc. she worked with in the US during her top earning years (looks like that and to reference a comment above, can everyone be wrong or in collusion?) and she has gone the law suit route because she has blown through the large amount of money she did make, then I hope the legal result reflects that.

Sad for everyone involved - except of course for the lawyers, they always win.

That's what I was wondering - especially with the language about holding her passport. Thanks for taking the time to look it up!
