See, I can see that but in my opinion having that freeskate in that group instead of Lipnitskaya or Ashley would've made it even harder to justify Sotnikova's PCS and GOE with the judges IMO, and I do think that even the Russian crowd would've been inclined to think Mao's performance outskated Sotnikova (I think they were on the fence with Kim, having Mao do that performance with obvious jump advantage I think the crowd would've been brought to reality). I think PCS at least would've been a lot higher. 9's on average, and there would have been some 10's as it was Mao's best ever freeskate.

I'm still just so bitter about it all.

You're all also forgetting that Julia got higher PCS than Mao with her twice-botched FS. Good lawd. The entire thing stinks to high heavens.

If you're obsessed in scores or placements, you'll have some possibilities to be lost in IJS sphere. I got to think Mao chose to focus on pursuing her own goal. It was kinda reasonable choice for her since it seemed she could not get both of them. Her ideal performance didn't seem to perfectly match IJS or the program which judges love very much. Sorry to say this but it seems kinda funny for me that people are still talking about PCS, GOE, blah even after she showed her performance of the life.

I know FSUers don't like her former coach Yamada for some luck of teaching textbook technique. I agree with it. However, I think she is one of the outstanding coaches in the world. She grew Midori and Mao, and other good skaters in Nagoya, Japan. One of her wonderful points is she tells her students "I want you to be a skater who is loved by people in stead of being a strong skater." Also she is the coach who can let her students know how wonderful figure skating is. Mao skated under many coaches but I see one of the biggest influence from Yamada for Mao when I think about what was the cap of her life as a figure skater. IMO

Mao should have received higher PCS than not just Julia but quite a few other skaters for that LP. Sadly even under IJS judges are holding down skaters that skate early and save high marks for the final group. I would like to see a rule that forbids that.

I certainly would hope so if that were the case! Unfortunately, I've heard many reports about the Russian crowd/audience not really cheering for anyone other than Russian skaters, so I think they would still be camp Sotnikova even if Mao gave that incredible performance in the last flight. Also, I don't think the judges were concerned about whether their scores for Sotnikova's PCS and GOE were justified or not... I think they just boosted them as much as they possibly could (1 judge gave her +3 on every element except for the 3-2-2 she two-footed and a +2 on something else) and didn't even attempt to hide it! I guess they had to give her those ridiculously high PCS to match/overtake Kostner, already knowing Kostner skated clean with 7 triples... and were worried not just about Kim, but Kostner passing Sotnikova.

I just found this, it's a bit surprising.

    http://abcnews.go.com/Sports/wireSto...oting-22635920
MOST TWEETED: You don't have to win gold medals to drive social media conversation. Going into Sunday, Twitter said that the Winter Olympic athlete mentioned most in tweets throughout the Sochi games was Japan's Mao Asada, who finished sixth in women's figure skating.

I've been thinking about translating what Mao(and other Japanese skaters such as Akiko and Daisuke) said during/after the Olympics but I'm a bit busy these days. So I'm doing easy posts, just quoting or posting links.

Shanetta Folle, Tatiana Tarasova's assistant and Mao's secondary coach during the time she worked with TAT. Unfortunately Kumiko Sato couldn't be there for Mao because Mao was allowed to take only 2 team members with her to Sochi (her coach and physical therapist), so Shanetta was there for moral support

The thing is, her program was extremely well matched to the CoP requirements. . To quote Evan Lysacek:
"Mao [Asada] looks insane. She's so good -- strength and jumps, of course, but also the complexity of her programs. I noticed in particular she is never on two feet; she is always on one foot, which is what judges look for in the components. They look for so much: transitions, edges, speed, multi-directional movement; she has all of that stuff."
If you open the PCS overview and go over the explanations (I have the USFSA one open, because the new ISU page is completely un-browseable for me), just from the technical point of view, Mao's program excels in demonstrating such things as command of the skating vocabulary, the use of effortless power to accelerate and vary speed, mastery of one foot skating, minimum use of cross-cuts/crossovers, unity (every step, movement, and element is motivated by the music), Phrasing and Form, Effortless Movements in Time to the Music. Then there are more subjective parts of the component score, such as projection and emotional involvement - but if a SO among the crowd that was rather tepid to non-Russian skaters and being the most Tweeted about athlete (I'm surprised, too - I thought the judging drama will cause the medalists' names to be the most Tweeted ones) isn't a proof of creating "an invisible connection with the audience", I don't know what is.

Mao's exhibition number is a Canadian singer IMA's "Smile" and "What a wonderful world". She sent Mao a video message.

I hope Mao wins the Worlds, or at least skates her very best. She, to me, had the best performance of the night,

Remember this? 2005 Junior Worlds. I was an instant fan after this and knew right away we were looking at something special

Technically superior to anything we've seen since Midori Ito by a lady, 8 triples, triple flip triple loop, double axel triple toe combo. Rewatching the program too, I was actually surprised at how many transitions were in the program before and after jumps, tons of rockers, counters, brackets, etc. And very few crossovers to gain speed relative to the other top skaters! The combos should NOT have been called underrotated (especially if they didn't call Kanako on anything and didn't downgrade Yulia's triple sal), and she should have won the freeskate with a score of 153-155, yes she was that good!!!

Getting PCS below Yulia was criminal, she should have won TES by a lot and been roughly tied if not slightly ahead of Yuna and Caro in PCS! (And Adelina should have been at least 7 points back of all 3 in PCS if not more!)
    This.

This is wonderful, thanks for sharing. And not even including Japanese Nationals, she's certainly landed a LOT of triple axels. The video editing on this is mind-blowing. Would love to see what they could do without focusing on just one jump.
