Alice Herz-Sommer, Oldest Known Holocaust Survivor, Dies at age 110

    News Articles:

    Daily Mail

An accomplished pianist, Ms Herz-Sommer, her husband and her son were sent from Prague in 1943 to a concentration camp in the Czech city of Terezin — Theresienstadt in German — where inmates were allowed to stage concerts in which she frequently starred.
An estimated 140,000 Jews were sent to Terezin and 33,430 died there.
About 88,000 were moved on to Auschwitz and other death camps, where most of them were killed.
Ms Herz-Sommer and her son, Stephan, were among fewer than 20,000 who were freed when the notorious camp was liberated by the Soviet army in May 1945.

Her mother was a playmate of composer Gustav Mahler and as a child Herz-Sommer often played with German novelist Franz Kafka who came to her home for Sunday lunch.
Herz-Sommer was living in Prague when she received her deportation summons from the Nazis, the documentary site explains. Her mother and husband had already been transported to Auschwitz where they were gassed, the site says. Both Herz-Sommer and her 5-year-old son, it says, were sent to the Theresienstadt camp.
    Haaretz

The world’s oldest Holocaust survivor, Alice Herz-Sommer, died Sunday at the age 110 in London. Herz-Sommer, a pianist, born in Prague, was the subject of a documentary “The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life”, nominated for an Oscar this year.
Alice Herz-Sommer was an amazing woman of incredible strength and character. May she RIP, and may her loved ones find comfort in their time of grief and loss.

She was an amazing woman, indeed.
May she RIP, and never be forgotten,

The film is available on DVD.
Much about her can be found on YouTube, also.
