    Underrated or Obscure Performances

We've all admired Lu Chen's Rach and felt better about our own sanity after watching Olga Markova's "Let My People Go" at one point or another. But, what are some performances or programs you feel haven't gotten the attention they deserve, whether that be because you think they've been overlooked or because they simply haven't been seen by many?

    Olga Markova - 1997 SP
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=21d8g1ydxcA

In honor of Markova's better days, I present her take on Bolero from 1997 Europeans. This was to be Olga's final season of relevancy, as she would be surpassed by Sokolova in the 1997-1998 season, but I'll always love her for bringin' voidy back when it was simply called Euro-trash.

    Shishkova/Naumov - 1997 LP
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kz1n9vyGX18

Olga's teammates, Shishkova and Naumov, also were more or less retired at this very same competition. Robbed of being 3-time World Champions and Olympic bronze medalists, they would return to their Don Quixote LP the following year for their GP events, but not before gracing us with this lovely rendition of Meditation that showed off what made this team the class of an otherwise embarrassingly thin field of pairs during the mid-90's.

    Krisztina Czako - 1998 SP
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQZglgKf3KM

Krisztina Czako would meet a similar fate to S/N and Markova just one year later. While her 1997 programs that won her a European silver were brilliant, it's her 1998 SP that proves they were no fluke. Uploaded by Krisztina herself, this program would contend for 1st at any major event these days.

(Warning: the sound is a bit off so it may seem she is off the music at times)

Underrated as always, she was placed 4th in this segment of 1998 Europeans and disappeared from the eligible skating scene soon after in spite of a brief comeback in the fall of 1999:

    SP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5MBjy88oD4
    LP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ajInv-E30k

    Stiegler/Zimmerman - 1997 Worlds LP
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kkYFPnn9yM

The forgotten Stiegler, Stephanie, finally made a World team in 1997 after just missing out in 1995 and 1996. While their inconsistency cost the USA a third spot for Nagano, her and John Zimmerman's free skate to "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" is one of my favorite pairs long programs. It's also one of the very few of his career that really showcased John's talents, IMO, that were largely wasted on the ice queen Ina. Their skate from Nationals has long been admired, but it's nice to hear an international commentary of the program.

Shizuka Arakawa - 1998 Olympics SP
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4fFzm8Iics

Diva Arakawa busted out a double lutz-triple toe in the short program of her first Olympic Games. Who would've thought this same skater would win gold 8 years later?

Laetitia Hubert - 1998 Olympics LP
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNWmwuxFgQc

Sadly, 1992 wasn't Laetita Hubert's only Olympic meltdown. This performance resulted in a heated feud between Laetitia, her coach, and the FFSF.

    Laetitia Hubert - 1999 LP
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avdiE1QJiFw

One year later, Hubert portrayed a drug addicted prostitute. Though this program has become more mainstream since being shared on YouTube, I don't think it's right for a thread on obscure programs - or one mentioning Hubert - to not include a link.

    Schwarz/Muller - 2000 LP
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5HHvXC-9W0

Peggy Schwarz competed in 3 Olympic Games with Alexander Koenig before teaming up with Mirko Mueller and landing on the podium of the 1998 Worlds. For their final year of competition, they took on the heavy theme of domestic abuse for their long program:

    Denise Biellmann - 1993 TP
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKYQxRteuis

Denise Biellmann is known mainly for her spins and athletic jumps, but her 1993 program to "On Golden Pond" showed a different side to her skating that was really quite lovely.

    Many performances by Rahkomo/Kokko.

In ladies, the 1980 short and long programs by the American skater SANDY LENZ. Knees like butter. Layback to die for.

Shishkova-Naumov SP skated to Ave Maria at the 1996 Centennial in Saint Petersburg. She has beautiful extensions, pointed toes. In spite of Vadim's mistake on the sbs 3t this was a beautiful performance.

    Ah, Stan Jeannette.

I'll never forget his "Le Petit Prince" free skate with his sock puppet hand: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ja-YefLRRMg

I really liked the OES of this era -- Klimkin (maybe not so OES), Smalun, Chiper -- interesting skaters with good choreography.

    Bechke and Petrov's "I Masnadieri":
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTA-at8bSec

It's one of my favourite programs of theirs. It was their exhibition piece for the 1991 and 1992 seasons, and they also performed it on their first tour with Stars on Ice in 1994. I love the dramatic music, there are some great voidy moments, and Elena actually looks relaxed. IMO I think they would have fared much better in the 1991 season had this been their LP.

I'm not sure that lovely "Patch Adams" LP deals that much with domestic abuse.
Maybe you meant their LP from the 1998/99 season?

This performance by the lovely and athletic Karen Preston at the 92 Olympics:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLLLEsTOSJI

On a night of splatfests one of the personal highlights of the night. Nobody remembers or cared though, only focusing on the splatfests of the big stars fighting for the medals that year, and the breakthrough great skates of Chen and Sato, so I am happy to recognize Karen for her great technical skate and Olympic moment.

So many women doing PB skates at the 93 Worlds:

    Preston: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAjMZPR4NQI
    Kiellmann: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHA091VZyo0
    Szewcenko: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEbB86JhYTo
Kulovana on her home ice: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcMeIUy3D7o

Plus the 3 medalists but they wouldnt count for unknown or obscure.

Kulova and Von Sahers lovely short programs at the Lillehammer Olympics:

    Another few to point out:

Jennifer Boyce and Michel Brunet's 1994 FD to a Chieftans medley
Drobiazko and Vanagas' "Sunrise At Alcatraz" FD
Annie Bellemare's SP's to "Somewhere In Time" and "The Piano"

ITA about the ladies at 1993 Worlds and Karen Preston's 1992 Olympic FS. Definitely!

Susan Humphreys' short and long programs at 1996 and 1997 Canadians, error-strewn though they were
Haruna Suzuki's SP and FS at 2011-12 Japanese Nats
Diane Szmiett's 2009 Cup of China FS (very good edges, and she outscored Flatt and Nagasu in that segment of competition)
Chantelle Kerry, 2012 Four Continents FS

Ok I just dscovered this gem of a FD a few weeks ago and I've been waiting for a thread to post it in.

I can't say it's underrated since I don't think I've ever seen anyone post about it ever, but it's definitely obscure, and just the opening and ending choreography, in combination with the vocals, makes me so hard that I had to share.

There was also the eponymous Michael Chack performance at US Nationals that was never shown on TV.
