    I think it means we'll be back in Europe in 2024.

    while I was very disappointed to see Madrid lose out, I am very comfortable and satisfied with Tokyo winning the right to host the games. I had endorsed them for 2016, I have no doubt they will put on a very efficient and well organized Olympic Games. They did well to win and didn't make any major missteps and had a very good technical plan. Congrats!

    I wonder why Paris didn't put a bid this time round.

    Good for Tokyo. It's the right decision.

    2024 will be the 100th anniversary of their last hosting of the Olympics and they probably felt they'd have a better chance.

    Ok, 2020 it is for me! I think it will be wonderfully organized and I can spend a week at the games and another week in other parts of Japan. I can't wait!
    I think I will have a snack and take a nap before I eat and go to sleep.

    I'm sad for Madrid (and I adore the city and the Spanish), but I'm perfectly fine with Tokyo. It'll be fun for the athletes there, and the Japanese will do a great job. And, speaking from experience, it'll be better for the females in Tokyo than in Istanbul.

    This is great news for wrestling. Japan won 6 wrestling medals, including 4 gold, in London. No way will they allow an Olympics in Tokyo without wrestling.

    YAY! For Tokyo!!! 2020 Olympics will be here before we know it, and they seem to be ready, with 4.9B already (expected cost: 6 B)

    Well let's cancel everything in Japan until they solve it then.

    "Everything" is not on a scale the magnitude and influx of people as the Olympics.

    Well, the IOC obviously feels that Tokyo is capable of dealing with the magnitude and influx of people and that's why Tokyo will be the host.

    You'd swear the Olympics were being held in Fukushima the way you're reacting.

    Tokyo would probably be safer than any other city in the world, for both men and women. However, Turkey hosts many high-level international sports competitions and receives more than thirty-five million tourists a year (presumably half of whom are "females" as you call them.) Every year the number of tourists increases and more and more international events are being held. So the overall experience must be quite good.

    OTOH I am glad that we have escaped the economic burden of the olympics and the disastrous amount of construction it would have inflicted on the already fragile Istanbul. Plus this is not our priority right now.

    So, the chance that an Asian locale will host 2022 Games becomes pretty darn slim. Wiki states that Almaty, Kazakhstan is the only city to confirm its intention to bid for the Games. Wiki states that the US is bypassing the bid process. So, a European city getting the Games becomes quite likely. Madrid* or Vienna?

    * ETA: Oops, meant Munich.

    Didn't Germany come a close second to South Korea for 2018? Maybe they would bid again?

    I hope they will. I may even try to go there if they get it. Why is the USA not even trying for 2022? May be they want to put their efforts into 2024?
