    F. Clothing Rule 612
    1. The following restrictions apply unless otherwise announced by the Ice Dance Technical Committee in an ISU Communication. At ISU Championships and International Competitions, the clothing must be modest, dignified and appropriate for athletic competitions – not garish or theatrical in design. Clothing may, however, reflect the character of the music chosen.
    a) Ladies must wear a skirt. The Ladies dress must not give the effect of excessive nudity inappropriate for an athletic sport. Men must wear full-length trousers: no tights are allowed and the Man’s costume may not be sleeveless;
    b) Accessories and props are not permitted; c) Clothing that does not adhere to these guidelines will be penalized by a
deduction (see Rule 353, paragraph 1.n) (ii). Besides, the decorations on costumes must be non-detachable. Part of the costume or decoration falling on the ice will be penalized by a deduction (see Rule 353, paragraph 1.n) (ii).

Did they change that again or did the rule about pants only apply to single and pairs skating? I can't recall if any ice dancers wore pants lately.

As far as the example given by shan, I think those pants would have been too dangerous anyway, since a skate could catch in them so so easily! Even though the material is light and flowing, it doesn't flow and get out of the way the way a skirt does. Especially for entrances and exits of lifts I would think it's dangerous because skate blades are angeled and stick out a little.

That is just so ridiculous. What century are these people living in? I also don't understand the differences between divisions. Pairs ladies can wear pants, but ice dancer can't. Lyrics are fine for ice dance, the sport hasn't been ruined, but heaven forbid it exists for singles.

I also don't get the tights thing. My friend, who isn't a skating fan, can hardly tell the difference. She thought Yuzuru was wearing tights in a past program, his pants were so slim and close fitting. Women can have their backs out, their sides cut out, wear garters, illusion mesh down to their navels, but bare arms on men...too risque.

    And to this.

They all have their own sets of rules.

Here is the source. Rule 500 applies to singles/pairs and it is stated as:

Rule 500 Definition of the skate blade and clothing
    1. Figure Skating blades used during competitions must be sharpened to produce a flat to concave cross section without change to the width of the blade as measured between the two edges. However, a slight tapering or narrowing of the cross section of the blade is permitted.
    2. At ISU Championships, the Olympic Winter Games and International Competitions, the clothing of the Competitors must be modest, dignified and appropriate for athletic competition – not garish or theatrical in design. Clothing may, however, reflect the character of the music chosen.
    a) The clothing must not give the effect of excessive nudity for athletic sport. Men must wear trousers; no tights are permitted. Accessories and props are not permitted. The decoration on costumes must be non- detachable.
    b) Clothing not meeting the foregoing requirements must be penalized by a deduction of 1.0 point (see Rule 353, paragraph 1.m) ii)).

Honest, not sure if Meryl would look good in those two piece pant suits

I think given her petite size, a skirt might be better to show more of her leg. Perhaps a layered skirt that mimics the bell pants.

The funny thing is, it used to be the other way around. (See Duchesnay's Reflections from 1990.) More recently I think they were specifically permitted for tangos, an maybe some other rhythms.

Love it! And it really worked with their program.

Marina Klimova also wore pants for the FD in '92.

Are there rules against bare skin when it comes to two piece costumes? Meryl has worn a two piece costume twice, and I couldn't tell if it was her bare skin or illusion fabric. Skaters should really consult with Meryl when it comes to illusion fabric, I can never tell when she's wearing it or if it's her skin.

Right, and Klimova was wearing a pantsuit, too, at the 92? Olympics. The black one.

    Thanks for the rule excerpt.

And I think Kaffeine has a point, Meryl's so tiny, pants, that would also likely to be low, are likely to make her appear even smaller.

I've been hoping for another two-piece costume from Meryl. I loved her Prince Igor and Bollywood costumes.

Ah, grad school! I was a grad student in 1992 and I had class the night Kristi Yamaguchi skated for the gold medal. I was a basket case by the time I got home and found out she'd won! (Nothing has changed in nearly 22 years, LOL).

I'm guessing she'll go a similar route for the FD this year: two piece, with a skirt. (I could be completely wrong). I love the "harem pants," but I agree they might pose too much of a risk. I could easily see a skate blade getting caught in them. Also not sure that's the best look for Meryl. I can't wait to see how the Persian dance moves are incorporated into this program.

I hope she does a 2 piece for Schez too.

BTW, I just found a really good clip of both their performances at the Progressive Gymnastic show from last Dec.

Nice! Thanks. Was this filmed for tv as well?

I keep thinking the "Fair Lady" sd costumes are going to be neutral in color and then for the free dance they'll pop. Can't wait 10 days!! And they might change them as the season goes along, too.

Thanks, Doris! I was annoyed that NBC chacked SLY on the TV broadcast.

I love how everyone just forget Charlie's costume!

But regarding Meryl, those pants look similar to Asada's pants. Maybe it's just me but I didn't like those pants on her. Loved the color though.

    Thanks for the clip.
A two piece costume would make more sense with belly dancing influenced moves.
My vote goes for a skirt. I'm definitely not a fan of this kind.

I think the harem pants would be fine for an exhibition, but might be risky for a competition.

I also agree that MC might go for a very striking black/white look for their MFL short dance and something really rich/ornate for the free. Besides, I'm sure Marina won't pass up the opportunity to get Charlie into a tuxedo One More Time. : D
