When I was making dinner yesterday, I was listening to a Russian documentary on Sochi in the background (I didn't even realise it would be on TV). It focused on people being forcibly evicted and having their homes bulldozed to make way for the Olympic venues and then getting feck all in compensation. So you had a whole family sharing one small room and a 9-person three-generation family in a tiny apartment with toilet outside and no access to hot water, and so on.
There were many incidents of this type of thing in Beijing^
Anyone who rode the bus from Downtown Vancouver to the Pacific Coliseum for the skating events would see the wide gap between our wealthy and our poor in vivid colour. Or small businesses being harassed by the Vancouver Olympic Committee. I don't think Russia is unique with respect to the treatment of non-wealthy people during Olympic times.
So much for Elton John keeping quiet about the law.
Elton John labeled Russia's new anti-gay laws "inhumane" and "isolating" when he played Moscow and Kazan in December, and now that he's back from tour he's taken the time to write a thorough condemnation of the legislation. He was further outraged by President Putin's recent remarks that linked homosexuality to pedophilia. "Vicious homophobia has been legitimatized," he writes, "by this legislation and given extremists the cover to abuse people’s basic human rights."I wonder if Putin was expecting that after publicly stating "we love Elton John."On that trip I met with members of the LGBT community in Moscow. Although I was still welcomed as an openly gay foreigner, I wanted to really understand at first-hand what difference the legislation had made to Russian LGBT in their own country. What I heard reinforced all the media stories that have been circling since the propaganda bill became federal law: that vicious homophobia has been legitimised by this legislation and given extremists the cover to abuse people's basic human rights.

i'm going to give a presentation on the subject of The Sochi Olympics controversies, The question of human rights in Russia,
And the Question of the Olympic charter versus Some of the Olympic hosting nations, And yada yada...
Does anybody know of a video, Or videos, Preferably not ones only in Russian without translation that sum up one or all of these subjects ?
I would probably edit a bunch of information myself using also a lot of articles and clips brought here, but would be nice to Show a video
That kinda brings it all and sums it up well.
And also, For objectivity, Would be great to have a more "Russian" point of view for all of this but with english subtitles\translation to also show.
That ride to the Pacific Coliseum was unbelievable.
Olympics are always a curse for the local poor population, no matter where.
Moscow says today that the West is trying to discredit the Games. No sirs, you have been doing it all yourself, no help needed from outside!
Support Daisuke, join Daisuke Takahshi Road to Sochi
So there will be at least one out athlete at the Olympics. Cool!
Actually, this is what German uniform looks like without "colour exaggerations".
Bogner designed his Winter 2013/2014 collection in Fall 2012. It is now all about "colour", after his 2011/2012 "Fire and Ice" 2-tone collection did not sell too well.
After 2012 he got into "colour" and stayed in "colour".
Very few people in Russia know that rainbow colours are symbols of Gay Movement...
Maybe more people know now, but not a year ago, when Russian Team and Russian volunteer uniforms were designed.
Russian Team is going to wear Rainbow Gloves..... that's better than Ashley's nails....
And Putin is wearing the Rainbow jacket....
I wish that international community would stop playing with this "colour" nonsense.. and make an official demand to clarify what "gay propaganda" means, point by point, on the premises "we don't want to break Russian laws, so please clarify".
First people must know what the law means in detail. ONLY THEN it can be taken apart and argued against.
Otherwise it is very convenient for the Russian side to reply to opposition by saying "Evil West wants us to allow pedophilia".
Coyness can be a very powerful weapon. 'I will be a guest in Russia so I would like you to please tell me what you exactly mean by "gay propaganda" so that I can respect your law.' Let them hang themselves.
