yes on the whole very good. contains an error not acknowledging Rudy Galindo though.

Am I the only one who took Brian's statement to possibly mean that he is taking the same stance as Johnny Weir? As in, "Yes, I'm gay, but I don't plan on making 'an issue of it' during the games, and I hope the games are about the athletes, first and foremost." I'm just wondering if the writer is reading too much into Brian's coming out. Or maybe I'm interpreting it wrong.

Oh wow, homosexuality is not a crime. Amazing. Bravo to Russia!

Only now it effectively is a crime because the laws mean that your very existence as a gay person equals propaganda (unless you erase yourself).

Brian's stand is the same (except Brian is being treated well in the gay press whereas Johnny was being compared to a terrorist, a traitor and someone deserving of death). I emailed the author and she felt the timing of Brian's statement was more important than what Brian said (if I interpreted the email correctly.)

No it is hysterical overreaction that says existence equals propaganda.

Because they are taking care of their own interests first, as pretty much everybody would do.

Interesting piece in the NY Times on the reality of LGBT people in Russia today:

Life Under Russia’s ‘Gay Propaganda’ Ban

Whatever else it is, Russian homophobia is a direct, even violent, reaction to the space created by a minority that has only come into the open over the last decade.

This is certainly the case in Arkhangelsk, where Rakurs was denied registration as a nonprofit organization in 2010 on the grounds that it promoted “extremism.” Rakurs managed to get this judgment overturned, but soon after, the “gay propaganda” ban was passed.

“The law was clearly designed to limit our activities,” Tatiana Vinnichenko, the director of Rakurs, told me. “And in many ways it has succeeded. We cannot hold protests of more than one person. And any attempts to help young people are stifled.”

Ms. Vinnichenko, a 40-year-old professor of Russian language at the local university, is undeterred. She showed me the community center she has established. I had expected to be led to a basement on the edge of town. Instead, I found myself on an upper floor of a tall building in the middle of Lenin Square, the statue of the Soviet leader gesticulating across the river port and the snowy woodlands. City Hall was on one side, the State Duma on the other. Rakurs (the name means “Perspective”) might be on the defensive, but no one can say it has been marginalized — yet.

Such a short sentence, and yet I'd have to write volumes to point out everything that's wrong about it...

That's really interesting, and gives some hope too. That line about LGBT rights being "an obsession of the decadent, commercialised West" made me lol, because if there's a country that's thrown itself into commercial ventures and free-market economy with the zeal of the converted, it's Russia.

It's more than lol! It is very true that Russian Government are OBSESED with brining back "traditional values and family structure". It goes beyond issues with LGBT communities.

"The decadent West" issues are not just about "family issues". It's also about "decay of High Culture" (for what it's worth): violent movies, decadent clothes and promiscuity of the young, children out of wedlock, alternative genres of music and theater and art... and so on.

The Channel 1 - official government TV channel is running all sorts of "Oldies but Goodies" music and entertainment shows and old classic movies. There are several "let's get married" shows where people are invited to seek out spouses. There are a lot of celebrations of the "Past Russian Glory", the classic artists, musicians, actors, authors... History programme, Science & Space Conquest programmes, Military accomplishments, etc.

The "let's get married" programmes I find ridiculous. The contestants, men and women over 30, who has not yet been married and/or had children, are called egotists. If you don't have a child or don't want one - you're not a good person, you're selfish if you want to live just for your personal pleasure.

Women encouraged to play "traditional roles" in marriage, stay home and raise children, and Men to be "bread winners" and "chiefs of the family".

A bunch of TV movies are made about the "Happy 50's, 60's and 70's" - the times of thaw, when USSR became less strict on enforcing strict communist values and laws.

90% of it is VERY CORNY.... an equivalent of 25 versions of "Leave it to Beaver" or "Father Knows Best"... in contrast to "Absolutely Fabulous" and "Benny Hill"......or "Lawrence Welk" shows in contract to "MTV", "Howdy Doody" in contrast to "Kardashians"....

And the strangest part is! The official and top Russian channels have top show hosts and National Award winning performers which are BLUNTLY GAY! Such bluntness in gay appearance would not be so acceptable even in the West. La Cage aux Folles characters are nuns compared to some of the Official Russian Media celebrities who are AGRESSIVELY promoted on all Russian TV.

OH! and Viktor (Dima) Bilan is said to by "gay" by many many..
He did have few girlfriends officially, but relation ship has never gone far..... so people say.... .
There are so many, and "all is the same"..... Hug the girls in public a few times, marry a woman for couple of years, or at least get engaged or start a girl-friend rumor..... and then be as crazy as you like, while the whole country discusses on the net "how gay he is".

Now that's a big LOL is not it......

Guess which artists were selected in early 2013 by Russian Government to record and perform the Russian Olympic Hymn? (before "the law" was introduced).
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=142fU8ecqQQ

Kirkorov of course! by Putin's approval (and other artists as well).

But the biggest lol is, that yes, it is true, that Kirkorov, Yudashkin, Leontiev, (film-maker) Eisenstein and many other "soviet/russian" famous gays are/were Jews, there is a conspiracy theory in full blast that Homosexuality in Russia is a product of major International Jewish Conspiracy to destroy a powerful country as yet another Judeo-Masonic attempt to overtake the world.

Most such publications are in Russian..... but now even Wikipedia has a section on Jews and Homosexuality (I guess it can be goodle-translated)
    http://traditio-ru.org/wiki/%D0%95%D...B8%D0%B7%D0%BC

There is an article in Russian - Gays are new Jews....
    http://izvestia.ru/news/555595

And another one..... "5 common traits between Jews and Gays"......
    http://mnenia.zahav.ru/Articles/3249/gay_i_evrei

And there are supporters of this theory in the West....
    http://www.realjewnews.com/?p=808
    http://gblt.webs.com/enemy_control.htm

    and by Arabs...
    http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2012...n_1867056.html

There are lots of LOLs out there.....

Like we say in Russia - "маразм крепчал"..... - insanity at large...

When I was in Tallinn for 2010 Euros, I went with Russian-Estonian friend to visit a couple of his friends. The host had on a Russian cable channel, and it was a repeat of a New Year's Eve show. The entertainers on it, which my friend said were among the most famous in Russia, made Miss Piggy and Liberace look demure.

    Very interesting post Tinami, thanks.

We've seen it all before. Gayness is ok as long as it's confined to the stage where camp and flamboyance live anyway.
