Thumbs up Young Artists Showcase (YAS4) choreography competition is underway

The Inside Edge blog previews Young Artists Showcase 4 (MK Blades is the new title sponsor): http://web.icenetwork.com/news/artic...&vkey=ice_news
    Excerpt:
The competition runs through Sept. 6, and the live final is slated for Dec. 1 in Washington, D.C. The competitors in the champions division are Yebin Mok, Eliot Halverson, Kate McSwain, Katherine Hill, Stephanie Roth, Nanoha Sato and Justine Kelleher. There is also a "grassroots" division for younger competitors. The top two finishers in each division will compete in the final.

There are five challenges: ethnic dance/global cultures; a program using a piece of cloth; a piece to the song "Oh Earth, Oh Earth, Return;" a mythological person/creature; and a piece to music for a solo instrument from the baroque, classical or romantic periods. All the skaters are instructed to wear basic black practice wear. Each competitor will be assigned a mentor.

Judges include Kurt Browning, Sara Kawahara, Caryn Kadavy, Kim Navarro, Brent Bommentre, Anita Hartshorn, Frank Sweiding, Craig Heath, Scott Williams, Rohene Ward and Dan Hollander.
First videos are uploaded here: http://youngartistsshowcase.net/

Mok's video today was exquisite. Just beautiful. You really felt as though the cloth was her partner. Very emotional.

For Challenge 2 (YAS-4), Zabato blew me away! I was also mesmerized by Yebin Mok losing herself in the music, the moment and allowing the desires of the flowing fabric to guide her. I loved Eliot's beautiful expressiveness, his creativity and his wonderful skating. Can't wait to see what else they each will do. I want to also look at the Grassroots division competitors too when I have a chance.

MKYAS4 Challenge 3- Oh Earth Oh Earth Return. Contestants were directed to use this music, composed by Bill Douglas, that is a poem. Music could be edited and combined with other selections or poetry as inspired.

Nice to see this event seeing sustained and steady growth. Encouraging a next generation of choreographers is definitely an under met need

MKYAS4 Challenge 5-Unconventional Requirements. Choreographers were given a list of elements to include in their pieces; two foot skating, toepick and heel work, Scratching skidding and scraping, create a figure type of tracing and follow a prescribed set of steps.
