Nelson Mandela, 94, in "serious but stable" condition

    http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/09/wo...dela.html?_r=0

Apparently has a recurrent lung infection, but is reportedly breathing on his own. Unfortunately, it is not unlikely that we may be seeing the end of this remarkable man rather soon

Wow! He is 94? He has had a remarkable life. Best wishes to him, for a full recovery though.

He's 95 next month. I doubt that a full recovery is possible for him, as his lungs are badly damaged. Hopefully he will get through this latest illness, but at his age his grip on life is always going to be tenuous. I think his loss, when it comes, will be deeply felt all around the world. There are few people who make so indelible an impression on so many.

I have the same feeling about him as I have about Prince Phillip. Not going to last much longer. Sorry but true.

Maybe it is time to let him go. I work with seniors and there comes a time when everyone needs to accept that their loved ones time is coming up and prepare for it. Mandela is one of the greatest leaders of all and his legacy will live on forever.

Buzz, I agree with you in principle; I work with people all the time who are kept alive, suffering, because their family isn't ready to say goodbye. I just do not know if that is the case here; we don't know if he is the one making his own decisions of care or if his family is, and how cogent he is at this point.

One of the most difficult things in the world is a family deciding when to "let go". Wishing them, and him, peace.

Just saw on CNN that Mandela is in critical condition. It does not sound good.

    Amen, to this!

    An excellent "appreciation" of Mandela:

Sounds pretty irreversible by now I hope the family can be strong and do the right thing at this point. Bless that very special man.

He has been such an inspiration to so many people both when he was incarcerated and then when he was released and became President and worked to integrate all South Africans - both Black and White.

I hope he will be allowed to die with dignity and as painlessly as possible. He has had an amazingly long life and has achieved probably more in his one lifetime than many others combined.
