    There's not only one waltz in it. There are more waltzes in the middle (the one around ~16:00 minute mark is wonderful).

    Yeah! It totally is! The one in ~20:00 mark is more angsty, but the one around 16:00 is really happy one. Those two are my faves so far.
    This ballet is FULL of waltzes, hah.

    I am less familiar with the piano concerto. When you have time, could you give us a little run-through? Movements, concepts? I mean, not too much, obviously, just a little more background info, if you don't mind

    I should have listen to it until the end before making comments. But while listening to it, I heard the other waltzes and I do like the one mentioned above. Anyway, I like the selection so far and the their story of the history of a relationship, because in a way it could be their story on the ice a little bit as well!

    Who was the person who said they had a dream V/M were dancing to "cheek to cheek"? I am pretty convinced you are clairvoyant please have more dreams of V/M winning olympic gold maybe it will come true!

    Soooooo looks like both V/M and D/W are both doing ballet this season... to be fair I'm not particularly fond of V/M's music choices - the whole announcement took me by surprise but I think it will grow on me like Carmen did and I hated Bizet's Carmen. But V/M have this sort of magic or skill that bring out the best in pieces of music.

    Omg they're using Cheek to Cheek!! About three months I said I had a dream they were skating to that, but if I'm remembering correctly everything about the dream was a nightmare. Hopefully that doesn't come to pass, but I am so happy right now. I've never heard of the FD music so I'll have to listen to it when I get home. And yay for finlandia!

    ETA: lol that was me parapluies. I haven't read people's posts just the article.

    BTW, I really love them.

    I hope you have good dreams now 'Cheek to Cheek' is so them! Maybe cause they already danced to a Fred Astaire piece. Anyways I was thinking that maybe it was a bad idea for Marina to give D/W a ballet ALSO because when the judges compare the two pieces together V/M are going to make D/W look like amateurs But I have a feeling D/W are going to change their music choice that's why Marina said she is waiting for champs camp to announce their music. Anyways I'm ecstatic that V/M are doing Finlandia I hope this season will be injury free!

    I really like the music selections. IMO both the short dance and free dance selections could completely suit them and highlight their strengths. (Not knowing yet which music cuts will be used, it's hard to say more). I think the free dance, in particular, will also stand out from anything else that is being done, in a good way.

    The free dance music is really challenging, though. I don't expect that program to reach its complete potential until the Olympics. The short dance will likely gel more quickly.

    Well, this is the music you need to understand, to feel it, to be IN it. You can't just listen it while you're in work and it's loud etc. You need the atmosphere.

    Classic concertos has 3 movements, so this concerto has too. In all classic versions 1st and 3rd movements are fast, but 2nd - slow, so are here. I wanted correct title to each movement, so I looked at Wikipedia (haha, and it basically has all the information I'll write there, but I had already written the information before looking in Wiki, so... enjoy anyways! ;D)

    1st Movement - Allegro (means - fast).

    Well, it has nothing much to say. Just enjoy it. When I listened, I wrote my thoughts on it, so here they are - All movement Scriabin is 'playing' with you. It sounds like a game. There's light and soft parts and, of course, darkness. Nothing has 'stability', I mean - if there's light part, you can't be sure it actually IS a light part because movement is full of surprises and lightness can become darkness in one second. 05:20 is pretty much the culmination part. It longs just a few seconds, but I LOVE those seconds.

    2nd Movement - Andante (means - slow).

    Starts around 08:27.

    It's in variation form. We had a semester when we learned all the musical forms, so I know what it means. Basically, there's one theme. And in all movement composer uses the same theme for several times and just make some changes to it (major becomes minor, fast becomes slow etc) and you can't recognize theme at all.
    So -
    Theme (starts 08:27) - plays just orchestra.
    Variation No 1 (starts 10:01) - piano joins and makes some improvization about the theme.
    Variation No 2 (starts 11:37) - everything becomes faster.
    Variation No 3 (starts 12:18) - major becomes minor. everything gets much slower.
    Variation No 4 (starts 14:10) - very light theme, everything is happy again. you can hear clarinet above all instruments. in the end, theme returns.

    I personally love the theme, variation no 1 and no 4. would suit TS perfectly. But I actually have a feeling that they'll use only 1st movement because they need to end program with power. As I heard, Glazunov doesn't have good endings, at least not powerful. Scriabin has lots of wonderful 'ending-music-themes' in 1st movement.

    3rd Movement - Allegro Moderato (means - moderate fast (aka not very fast))

    Starts around 17:11.

    Well, I say honestly - i like 1st and 2nd movements MUCH better, I hope they'll use them not this. But still I had to write something while listening.

    He's playing with us again. Feels like 1st movement again. Nothing is 'stabile'. There's part ~19:00 that I love, it is slow, definitely good for dancing, but it gets faster then. It ends around 20:10, when 'non-stabile' parts are again here. Love the moment around 25:36 - music is light, but sad, a bit angsty. Then 'not-stabile' part starts again. Then here are a lot forte and piano parts.

One moment it is very subdued and then BOOM, you jump off your seat? LOL. I ask more out of curiosity about the piece itself and not the program.

    I have a question (unrelated to music), but how come it's always icenetwork that releases their music? Wouldn't it make better sense for a Canadian outlet to do it?

    I think it's a sure bet that the two programs have nothing in common. It sounds to me like Marina went the same approach for this season's SD's as she did for last season. I expect similar for the FD's. Sounds like V&M's will be more classical, elegant and subtle so D&W's should be more dramatic and angsty. Like she said, she's playing to their strengths.

    Well, I think comparing Haydn and Scriabin would be very wrong for me as a musician (it would be like comparing skaters of 50s and those who skate now), for first, because, they are from different times. Haydn is from classicism, but Scriabin is from late romantism and even with taste of expressionism (I read that he was influented by Chopin (who is a RARE romantic) and Arnold Schoenberg (who is expressionist)), so he is kind of mixture of both these styles. I didn't quite know how to describe his style, but when I saw his influences, I was totally sure he is romantic-expressionist or something like that. But, going back to your question - well, Haydn's music is absolute different from Scriabin's, but I see a little connection. Yes, Scriabin's music is full of surprises, but not maybe as you described 'BOOM and you're off your seat'. Well, maybe sometimes even like that ;D I don't know, i'm confused, because i don't know how to answer ;D Romanticism needs to be a little bit 'overdosed'. If it's loud, it's extremely loud, if it's quiet, it's extremely. That's all I can say.

    Well, I haven't actually listened to Mendelssohn's violin concerto, but that's uncharacteric to 1st movement in concerto to be in variation form. 1st movements in classic concertos are always in 'sonata forms', it would be VERY long to tell, how it works, the system of it. But it's normally that main theme returns in the end, that's a sign that it's sonata form. and yes, it might seem as a variation form, but it's not. In sonata form cadenza can include parts from main theme, and subject theme can sound like main theme (just in other scale)....... well, it's hard. Music theory is DAMN hard. But I'd say that there's a really small possibility that 1st movement would be in variation form. So I say no. Variation form is characteristic to 2nd movements.

    I LOVE the choice. It's SO them. I think they should use parts from Spring/Summer in Seasons, and 1st movement from Scriabin. I think they need to use both, but I really want them to end program with Scriabin, definitely. And, yes, I think pieces would fit to each other. As the Autumn/Winter parts in Glazunov are not so good, they should include piano concerto as Autumn and Winter parts.

    Btw, Haydn has oratorio 'Seasons', and he described Spring as childhood, Summer as juvenility, Autumn as maturity and Winter as oldness. And Marina said something about describing life as seasons in this program. I don't know, this just came through my mind.

    It would, but unless the Skate Canada website did it, I don't know who would. And then, if SC started announcing music for one team, they'd be obliged to do it for all other Canadian skaters, for the sake of fairness. Icenetwork is a more generalized figure skating site that understandably reports mainly on US skaters but certainly highlights other skaters from around the world, and Lynn Rutherford has a long history of writing about VM, too.

    Thank you. I was just wondering since icenetwork is owned by USFS and US-centric, but what you've said makes sense. I listened to the waltze parts Catherine mentioned and a little bit of Scriabin. I really love the music, I'm very happy!

    I'm a musician as well. Mendelssohn E Minor isn't in variation form. I think it's Sonata Allegro Form.

    I think the difference is, the USFSa has their own separate website, which is focused only on US skaters and in a more competitions/results based way. Skatebuzz was the closest thing SC had to Icenetwork, and it never even got close to that level of success and is currently not available (I believe they're reworking the site to reopen in the future.)

    The FD music is unfamiliar to me but I've been listening and I'm liking it. I can't wait to see what they come up with!

    Based on the article, I think it will be the Ella Fitzgerald one, with Louis Armstrong -- both songs mentioned, "Cheek to Cheek" and "Dream a Little Dream" were sung as a duet with the two. If they chose the Muskrat Ramble also as done by Louis Armstrong, even if it's three pieces of music, there's a continuity to the SD's music.
