Well, there is some relevance, in that RCI is known for their ice skating shows, and they were premiering new diving shows on the ship Louganis and Kwan did advertisements about. It isn't like they picked a modern decathlete or something totally random.
But yeah, your basic point still stands- they are very marketable, despite no longer being active athletes.
