Exactly why the US should never have boycotted the Moscow Olympics in 1980 and instead gone there and stomped them on the field of play despite the organized doping programs that the Russians had and the corrupt judging.

Although I don't think a protest would do any good really, I think not participating and causing Sochi to lose all that potential revenue after investing so much into the games is much more effective than beating the Russian team in Curling or in hockey or in bob sled, etc.

Haha, that is a joke right, especially since when we know people like Carl Lewis was on drugs as well. In effect every was on drugs during that era.

Not everyone was doping. For instance most female swimmers didn't look like men unlike the East German women's team.

Oopsy! You added an "S" to skater. Anyway, thanks for starting another Johnny thread. And NO, if he makes it out of U.S. nationals, Mr. Weir will NOT give up the opportunity to compete at another Olympics. Plus Johnny loves Russia in spite of its' homophobic policies. Plus being the only openly gay skater, Johnny's presence at the Olympics might be a bigger statement than if he boycotted.
It's official. I am madly in love with Meryl Davis.

    First...

Second, you've got a point. Johnny would be a big old "IN YOUR FACE" to Putin and this ridiculous homophobic law!

I wonder if mainstream American media will even mention the issue during the games.

No athlete will boycott. That would just be silly, and would not make a difference in the state of things unless ALL the skaters didn't go.

Did anyone see the movie Stick It? Now that kind of action would make a statement. More to the point, why is a country that has such a policy being "honored" with the Olympics? And why would the ISU participate?
DH - and that's just my opinion

I totally expect nothing but stuff like this! If you want to enjoy the games it will be just impossible! I mean with Plushenko in Vancouver you had Lennin Statues and Stalin statues and all about how evil Russians are and now the whole Olympics will be there so for drama and pro American stuff every hour of every broadcast will likely have policy reports about Pussy riot and gay rights and Chechnya and maybe Syria or Putin or something!

    The article also comments:

...With the Games less than a year away, there's no way the IOC will want to rock the boat too much. Going forward, however, the IOC must consider a bidding country's record on LGBT issues before awarding an Olympics. No country with Russia's laws should ever get the privilege of hosting again.

Every country that sends athletes deserves to be in the mix for contending to host if they want! If you don't want the country to host than also ban the athletes! How about that! Maybe some athletes support the policies! Speak in favor of them in their home country! You don't want that!

^^ I pointed out another comment from the article.

Yep, every take on this Olympic controversy is debatable, even tho' human rights shouldn't be.

Human Rights Watch blasts Olympics over worsening plight of Russian gays
    6/20/2013 4:49pm by John Aravosis

This is getting interesting. Human Rights Watch, one of the lead international human rights groups, has written a rather direct letter to the International Olympic Committee, scolding the IOC for its inaction in the face of growing anti-gay hate in Russia, something which violates the Olympic charter.

And the point isn’t simply academic. Russia will be hosting the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, and there’s growing concern about the safety of foreign athletes and tourists, especially gay ones.
