    U.S. Ice Dance News & Notes - Summer 2013

Jun Y attended the Edward G. Picken Pro-Am Dance Classic and shared detailed impressions in the general U.S. Club Competitions thread in Kiss and Cry (open to all until July 1, 2013): http://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/show...=1#post3936400

I already started a separate thread in the Trash Can for Madison Hubbell's Olympic season blog for IceNetwork... here's the link to her first installment (her personality shines through it): http://web.icenetwork.com/news/artic...&vkey=ice_news
    Excerpt:
As for the skating season, Zach and I are finished with our programs, and we are trying to connect everything with our new elements. At the moment, everything probably looks like a mess, but the progress is happening, and we have faith in our material.

This past week, however, I was a little clumsy and fell on a three turn. Embarrassing, I know! I smacked my head, and although the doctor has said I will be fine, he wants me to take a little break for my brain to heal. So ... this past week has been a bit boring.

I had to cancel our show last weekend in Oakland, since show lights and spinning wasn't a recommended activity. And this weekend is the annual show at the Detroit Skating Club. The doctor didn't want me to participate in the show either, but I actually have a cool opportunity off the ice. The ice show will be live-streamed for the first time in its history, and I will be helping with some commentating and behind the scenes action.
    ETA:
Article about the Cannuscio ice dancing sisters - older sister Isabella skates with Michael Bramante (they placed 9th in their debut at 2013 U.S. Nationals) and younger sister Anastasia skates with Colin McManus (their second 6th place finish at Nationals): http://www.ice-dance.com/main/news/g...for-cannuscios

Juvenile Pattern Dances as skated by Elizabeth Tkachenko/Alexei Kiliakov (ETA: son of the Wheaton ISA coaches Alexei Kiliakov and Elena Novak) at the Picken Pro-Am competition last weekend: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=kb5KZhef55U
(Not sure if the order in the video is Hickory Hoedown, Fourteenstep, Ten Fox?)

ETA that I came across this old article from July 2008 about the WISA with quotes from Novak and Kiliakov: http://web.icenetwork.com/news/artic...&vkey=ice_news
    Excerpts:
Novak and Kiliakov, while they notched some notable competitive successes within Russia, never quite broke through the crowd to make their marks internationally. They relocated to England in 1993, where Kiliakov toured with Tatiana Tarasova's Russian All-Stars, and to the U.S. in 1999, where they spent four years in the cast of Disney on Ice.

When injuries and general wear-and-tear forced them off the ice, they landed at the Wheaton Ice Arena, where they set up shop as coaches along with Ukrainian Dmytri Ilin, also a Disney alumnus. All three quickly learned that demand for ice dancing instruction in Washington's Maryland suburbs was far short of the new supply.
    ...
"In Russia," Kiliakov said, "I think dance was always regarded as a discipline equal to freestyle, pairs or any other kind of skating. Here in America, we had to get away from the idea that dance was something you tried after you did freestyle first."
    ...
"Other coaches ask me 'Where do all your boys come from?'," Kiliakov said. "Boys are out there. If you can develop your core group of boys, you can attract others. The more boys you have, the more you can get."
    ...
"There are still some advantages to a Soviet-type system you can't have with private lessons," Novak said. "Keeping promising couples together here can be difficult. The boy and the girl have to be available to practice at the same times and have to have the same level of commitment. It was a lot easier for a Russian coach to walk through a class of five and six-year-olds and just say 'You with you and this one with that one.'"
Five years later, here is the current group of WISA ice dancers: http://www.wisa.us/skaters.html

Do you guys know when the entries for the 2013 Lake Placid ice dance championships will be out? The deadline for registering was something like Jun 24th, so I guess they should be online soon.

I don't, but hopefully the groups will show up sometime on this page: http://www.lakeplacidskating.com/events/icedance.php
    Dates are July 31-August 3, 2013.

Ice-dance.com will have their usual comprehensive event site - link will be cross-posted here and in the 2013-14 Kiss and Cry forum when it goes up.
If anyone is going and would like to volunteer to help them in Lake Placid: http://www.ice-dance.com/main/2013-l...iew=foxcontact

The Shibutanis announced their music selections on their website:
    http://maiaandalex.com/2013-2014-program-announcement/

Their SD will be to music by Michael Buble.
Their FD will be to Michael Jackson's "Wanna Be Startin Something", Thriller and a version of Ben played by the 1966 Quartet, a group of young Japanese musicians.

The list of choreographers they are working with this season is impressive, Marina Z of course but also Corky Ballas on the SD, and Travis Payne and Stacy Walker on the FD.
They are really putting a lot of thought into this year's programs. Can't wait to see them.

^^^ The guy in the middle that spoke to the judging panel is Joel Dear, who competed at U.S. Nationals in ice dance with Meghan McCullough from 2003-2006. They finished 10th in Senior in 2006 and medaled twice at the lower levels (Junior pewter, Novice silver). Tosha Hanford, Chris Trefil and Angela Kim round out the group of six.

ETA that I posted an IN article about this act in the AGT discussion thread in OTBT: http://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/show...=1#post3954424

Whitney Miller, who debuted on the JGP in Austria last season with Kyle MacMillan and placed 6th in Junior Dance at 2013 U.S. Nationals, has teamed up Shane Firus in Canada and the team is training with Wing and Lowe in the Vancouver area. They are registered to compete at Minto Skate in Ottawa, August 1-4.

Registered to compete in the Quebec Summer Championships, Aug. 8-11 near Montreal, are Alissandra Aronow/Collin Brubaker (S8 at Nationals) and the new Junior team of Angelina Giordano/Jared Weiss. Both teams are based in Canton, MI.
