    Top 24 Season's best Pairs

With all the splits/ retirements what teams are guaranteed a Grand Prix through having a top 24 season's best score/ returning with a different partner? All of the splits and re-teaming is getting quite confusing!

With Berton/Hotarek splitting, the Pairs seeds become:

    Seeded skaters:

    Stolbova/Klimov
    Duhamel/Radford
    Peng/Zhang
    Sui/Han
    Antipova/Maisuradze, up from 8th, replacing Savchenko/Szolkowy
    James/Cipres, up from 10th, replacing Berton/Hotarek, up from 9th, who replaced Moore-Towers/Moskovitch

I don't know why no one is mentioning Volosozhar/Trankov in those lists, as they have said that they want to compete also in the GPs. Or did they say something different in another recent interview that I have missed?

Because they did not compete at 2014 Worlds and so will not be seeded on the GP. I included V/T in my ISU SB list (copied over from the thread I referenced).

They didn't compete at worlds, so they will not be seeded for the grand prix next season.

I guess because we are still awaiting an official press release from Skate Canada, the status of L&S is not official.

In last year's GP Announcement, the rule was that couples in seeded positions -- 1-6 at the prior Worlds -- who retire/split/skip GP are replaced by active skaters starting with 7th place at prior Worlds, and that skaters in the 7-12 group -- 7-12 at the prior Worlds -- who retire/split/skip GP are replaced by actives skaters starting with 13th place at prior Worlds.

There are two confirmed splits in the seeded group -- S/S and M-T/M -- moving up two active teams from the 7-12 list -- currently A/M and B/H, since the B/H split has not been confirmed -- and there is one confirmed split in the 7-12 group -- B/L -- moving up one active team from 13th place, the Wendes. There was a removed Facebook post by Swiegers that originally said he and L/S were splitting, which would mean Z/B would move into the 7-12 group, and if B/H are also splitting as reported, the DM/G would move into the 7-12 group. DM/G are the last Pairs at Worlds to make the FS.

Since the teams are selected by groups of three, with each Fed having to choose one of each group, the selection groups will be:

    1-3: S/K or D/R or P/Z
    4-6: S/H, A/M, or B/H; or with a B/H split, S/H, A/M, or J/C
    7-9: With no B/H or L/S split, J/C, C/S, or L/S. With B/H only split: C/S, L/S, or W/W. With L/S only split: J/C, C/S, or W/W. With both B/H and L/S split: C/S, W/W, or Z/B
    10-12: With no B/H or L/S split: W/W. With B/H or L/S split: Z/B. With B/H and L/S split: DM/G.

The announcement doesn't say that skaters in 7-12 group who move into the seeded group are also replaced.

Skaters/couples who have placed 7 – 12 in each of the 4 disciplines (Men, Ladies, Pairs, Ice Dance) at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2013 will be guaranteed to be selected for two ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating events, provided that these skaters/couples fulfil the requirements of the minimum score. If there are any retirements from placements 7 – 12, the vacant places will be completed with the next ranked skaters/couples of the 2013 ISU World Figure Skating Championships (placed 13 and below) will be moved up to fill their position as Placement 7 -12 skaters/couples

Thank-you for the info, black labrador.

I assume you mean the 2014 World Championships?

No, 2013 World Championships for 2013/2014 ISU Grand Prix.
I don't think there is a regulation for 2014/2015 ISU Grand Prix.

If Berton/Hotarek and Lawrence/Swiegers splits will be confirmed:

    1-3 S/K, D/R, P/Z
    4-6 S/H, A/M, J/C
    7-9 C/S, W/W, Z/B
    10-12 D/G, T/K, F/B

So last year's rule stays in effect for next season?

Not necessarily: the two teams moving from 7-12 to the seed group *did not retire*. The last Announcement does not address whether they are replaced. If B/L, B/H, and L/S retire, then those three definitely will be replaced, but not necessarily the two that replace S/S and M-T/M from the 7-12 group.

All of the explanations/projections are based on the assumptions that the rules will remain the same, and there have been many explicit caveats stated in this and other threads. The Announcement can be published after the initial selections are made.

The title of the thread would be more accurate as "Top 24 Pairs of the Season" or "24 Best Pairs of the Season". "Top X Best Whatever" is redundant.

I think new pairs-split or not should have to start at the bottom.

No, it is not redundant because it refers to the 24 highest (top) season's best scores. Top 24 pairs of the season doesn't say by what measure (perhaps medals? World ranking points?) and top 24 scores would not result in 24 unique teams- v/t, s/s would take up half of the list.
