I saw that and they are evacuating a prison. Horrible scenes on tv with homes burning. Prayers and thoughts to everyone effected.

I was very near the burn area hiking in an open space a week ago. It was cold and foggy that morning. Then we got 90-100 degrees temperatures and high winds.
So far no cause has been mentioned. For those interested this link has quite a bit of information.
I live about 40 miles north of the fire and with the wind shift today there's lots of smoke here. We were driving by on I25 to the west today. Heading south in the morning it was just hazy toward the fire. Coming back north after noon it had really billowed up and was a lot further to west than it had been just a few hours earlier.

WOW, stay safe! The weather man was saying how bone-dry it'd been out there, and how the brush was just dessicated. The cause could have been something as small as a discarded cigarette, dry lightning strike, improper campfire maintenance...in those conditions it wouldn't take much.

I saw an older man in tears on the news...said he'd worked all his life to save and build, had his dream home, and now it's all gone.

Just drove through the area (en route to garden of the gods) this past Sunday. Gorgeous area-- very dry conditions indeed.

map showing where the affected homes are

    ETA:
If you look to the southwest of the burn area, the symbol of the green horse with a rider is the location of the Flying W Ranch which burned down last summer in the Waldo fire. They are rebuilding and hoping to be open for the anniversary of the the fire (June 26th). The reason they are on this map is because they are offering space to animals displaced by the Black Forest fire. Flying W Facebook page

As bad as I feel for the people who are impacted by this disaster, I also feel so bad for the livestock and other animals who are affected as well...many will not be rescued and will die.

Another area was added to mandatory evacuation. http://forecast.weather.gov/wwamap/w...on%20immediate
I just spoke with a friend about a mile from there. She's packed and ready to take the animals and go. Her kids are currently out of town with their dad and they keep calling with random impractical items for her to save - like her son's drum set.
