Johnny Weir headlines Oakland skate exhibition Sunday

OAKLAND — Some of America's top figure skaters will appear Sunday at Oakland Ice Center in an exhibition that includes 60 up-and-coming Northern California athletes.

Two-time Olympian Johnny Weir, who has launched a comeback to try to qualify for the Sochi Games next year in Russia, headlines "Ice Dreams," a limited national tour. Also scheduled to skate are reigning national champion Max Aaron and Caydee Denney and John Coughlin, who won the 2012 pairs title at the U.S. championships in San Jose. Coughlin is returning to the ice after having surgery earlier this year to repair a torn labrum in his left hip.

Reigning junior national champion Polina Edmunds of San Jose also will be featured in the show. For information: www.icedreamstour.com or 212-600-4330.

Holy moly, 10 minutes from my house; pity the ice center is in an up and coming, but still a bit sketchy 'hood. Not somewhere for a woman to be out at night. I'll beg the old man tomorrow and see if I can cajole him into an early 50th b-day present.
THANK YOU Aliona and Robin, Dai, Mao, Carolina, Akiko, all the skaters who retired after the Olympics, and yes, even you Jeremy)!

He seems much more in demand by shows and tours than Lysacek who won the Olympic Gold and had a much more successful career, arent I right. Once Stars on Ice goes under, which it will soon, poor Evan will have nothing. Johnny is such a great performer and show skater and such a great and flamboyant personality I am not surprised in anyway.

    Much more interesting:

Jason Brown skating to Frank Sinatra's "Fly Me To The Moon".

Jason in suspenders and bowler is very handsome and of course he has his amazing style and performance!

Personally I'd much rather see Johnny in a show than Evan, but in answer to your question, no, you aren't right. The Ice Dreams "tour" is only three cities (and I think they sometimes do a Christmas show somewhere) organized by Johnny's agent, so of course he's the headliner. SOI may be a shadow of its former self, but a spot on that tour is still prestigious, and Evan did it for three-four years I believe. As for other show opportunities, without knowing how many invitations each skater gets, it's hard to judge who is most "in demand."

Very few ice shows around nowadays so skaters have no choice but to put together their own show which is what Weir did with Ice Dreams. Maybe one day Evan will organize his own tour?

Looks like Denney/Coughlin and Hubbell/Donohue didn't make the show after all.

Yeah, I was surprised about that. I wonder if injuries are still a problem. Coughlin had hip surgery, and recently Madison Hubbell fell on a 3-turn & hit her head (don't think it was serious, and don't know if was a factor in the missed show appearance).

    EDIT: She'd tweeted this...

I hit my head yesterday, falling on a three turn! But that can't keep me away from my boys, @JohnnyGWeir @MaxTAaron see you in Oakland

Hmm. Hopefully everyone is okay. It's too bad H/D have had some bad luck with their planned appearances. I was going to go to the canceled show in MA.

Haven't seen anything to indicate Johnny has any involvement other than headlining. Tara has been putting together shows like this for years to showcase her clients and build her business, and I'm pretty sure that she and her staff developed this one and do all the legwork. The only reference I've seen to Johnny putting together his own show or tour is his on again/off again dream to do some sort of spectacular with Lady Gaga and Elton John, and I suspect if he could ever get them to agree to something, it would again be Tara "putting it together."

As for Evan, that would surprise the hell out of me. He'd need some serious partners and sponsors for something like that, and while he's got the medals, I don't think he has the level of widespread recognition or the personality to carry his own tour. Very few have done it successfully as even a one-off, let alone a tour, and that includes many of the sport's superstars who ended up being part of ensemble tours instead.

Madison did fall on the ice and hit her head. Her doctor would not clear her to travel. Hubbell and Donohue were looking forward to skating their exhibition program in Oakland.
