I wasn't aware the bee started today myself.

    @ScrippsBee tweeted:
"We now have 42 semifinalists. We've added #speller44 to the 41 previously announced. Details to follow at spellingbee.com"

    Twitter hash tag is #spellingbee

Do you know if the preliminaries were on ESPN3?.

Found it. It was - http://espn.go.com/watchespn/index#type/replay/ Scroll down. I know what I'm watching this evening.

I like a lot of the spellers, Grace, Armind, Vanya, but I will be especially watching Vismaya - http://public.spellingbee.com/public/spellers/2013/256

    A 42nd speller has been added to the semi-finalist list - http://www.spellingbee.com/bee-blog/...final-total-42

Here's a list of semi-finalists in a better order (according to number and, therefore, to state) - http://public.spellingbee.com/public...html?type=semi

For those who remember last year - Lori Ann Madison, the 6-year-old, who was the youngest contestant, didn't make it to the bee this year.

I think it's sort of cool that the committee that selects the words for the Bee is kept secret. No one admits to being on the committee. That would be quite an assignment.

Watched round 2 last night. I didn't notice any "favorites" that missed the semi-finals, but I probably missed something. I'm working on round 3 this morning.

I missed the first 20 minutes. Why? They switched the Bee to ESPNews because of a softball game going over time. I hope I can pick up those first 20 minutes on one of the reruns. Grrr. Good think I have the recording set to go long.

Arvind Mahankali (Speller 163) spelled "tokonoma" and "knaidel" correctly, smiling and nodding as he did. He is the winner of the Bee, and the first male champion since 2008.

    Scripps National Spelling Bee 2013

I really got into this! The final two girls were my favorites. The 5th place girl was who I was most rooting for. She seemed very normal, most of these kids are much more socially awkward. The 4th place girl was hilarious.

It was very fitting for Arvind to win on a German word! Watching him just stand there while the confetti fell was just uncomfortable. It was almost as if he was waiting for another word. Lol

I didn't watch but actually know quite a few words this year, including the winning Yiddish word. Congratulations!!

A couple of classmates and I were watching it in the hospital lobby yesterday while waiting for our attending to show up. It was funny because the sound was off so at first they would show just the definition and etymology on the screen, and we were stuck desperately trying to guess the word

We didn't get any of them right

We missed the coverage of the Bee this year , but it cracked us up that the final word was "knaidel" (matzah ball). Congrats to Arvind!

These kids are amazing and I heard Arvind wants to be a physicist. So congrats to him and best of luck to them all.
