Predictably, so many "war horses" and well-known musical selections. Hey, it's an Olympic year. I "get it"

What will it take to truly STAND OUT?

Thinking of it, it's not that uncommon for skaters to recycle old programs for the Olympics.
Arakawa, Sale/Pelletier and I think at one point Elvis Stojko (not exactly sure of it, but IIRC the German commentator said something like that at the SLC Olympics that he also had a "Best Of" Free Program there...again: not sure of this one) come to mind.

Except Arakawa's Olympic LP didn't resemble her 2004 version....at all.

Yes, Stojko had his 1994 free program in 2002 if I remember well. Baiul kept her 1993 lp in 1994 Olympics. So did Browning. Perhaps it's different if you've kept your program from the previous season, I notice people frown more when a skater reuses a program from more than one season ago instead of just the previous season. Usually I want a new program each season, but I am looking forward to Abbott's Exogenesis program again, it's one of the rare occasions I don't mind a skater reusing a program.

Even Peggy Fleming, Janet Lynn and Dorothy Hamill skated old programs in '68, '72 and '76, respectively! Peggy even went back to her 1966 program. Carol Heiss had a new program in 1960 but cobbled bits and pieces from older programs (she seemed obsessed with the ballet Giselle, using different bits of the score every single year from 1955-56 onward). And didn't Tara Lipinsky skate her 1997 program in Nagano/'98? Some of the jump passes had higher difficulty in '98 and/or were reshuffled to occur at different moments but the music and basic choreography were the same as in 1997, when Tara won Worlds.

Going the tried and true seems a well worn path - and if you are challenging for the podium, I can see how one would not necessarily want to "challenge" either the perception of judges or the skating fans. For skaters who are still emerging and working their way up the ranks however, I think it is an even more important opportunity to do something which shows real risk taking and growth. Simply skating the equivalent of a prior year's program to "different" (essentially the same genre) of music, doesn't "cut it" in my book as the strategy to take for the Olympic season. Show "growth" or don't expect to "make a move" or set yourself up for the next cycle. JMO.

Tara's music was different in 1998 from what she had in 1997. It might have been the same style but the actual music selections were different.

Jeff reused his 03/04 music for the 2006 O's, but reworked the program. I preferred his original version of S&D instead of the reworked one, and I know most would have preferred if he'd kept his Glenn Gould LP instead of returning to S&D.

IIRC he also reused his 06/07 music for 07/08, but to be fair, he hadn't had a full season in 06/07 because of injury (and it worked out well for him!)

In 1997 she skated to the soundtracks from Much Ado About Nothing and Sense and Sensibility. In 1998 she skated to the soundtrack of The Rainbow. So both OSTs, but I never thought them very similar and felt that her skating had matured during the year between.

If anybody can pull-off Carmen with real emotion, it is she. Excellent choices; now do the jumps!!!

OMG, you are right. I watched the 97 Natls and Worlds and thought to myself, "Sounds like her 1998 music, squeals and all in the same places!"

i like the choice for the sp, for the lp I just expect nothing more of morozov than a revival of miki andos carmen of 2008. I can't wait to compare leonovas carmen to andos

Okay choice for the SP, but now those Carmens are getting too much even for me, although I like the music and thought that I will never tire of it .

Thanks. Actually I was expecting something like that - opera really suits them. And, technically, last year it was not an opera. A good choice (in my opinion).
