I think NBC will handle this like they did last year. Just went back to the SA 2012 thread and NBC recapped the Ladies SP, a few of SP from the Men, on to a few of the Mens FS, and then the last group of Ladies FS. They entirely skipped pairs and only showed one FD - Meryl/Charlie. So, I'm guessing, getting to the FD might be a little difficult. The bigger problem for those that like to attend practices and the breakfast will be Sunday morning when the Marathon is kicking off at 6:59 a.m.

Last year the Gala ran from 9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Eastern. Makes it hard for fans who want to travel Sunday night and want to see the Gala.

Anyway, thanks so much for all the input on the marathon and streets and event times. I'll be passing this along to my friend who wants to attend.

    Concerning the Marathon -

Hopefully the Skate America organizers will use the Marathon to their advantage - as an opportunity for cross promotion and off-ice activities for the skaters.

Last year, at the Salt Lake Senior B, there was a major College football game scheduled for the same Saturday as the skating free programs. This particular football game was the biggest rivalry game of the year and we were worried about parking, access, and general craziness. The Senior B organizers worked with the whole situation to their advantage. Parking was separated - no problems finding spaces. Skaters and fans wandered around the tailgate parties and craziness and had a great time. I think some of the tailgaters came in and watched some of the skating. The organizers found a time for some of the skaters to go golfing close to the University and a couple of the skaters even went to the football game (Max Aaron was one of them). The skaters had a great time. The fans had a great time. The officials had a great time.

Hopefully it will be the same at Skate America.

It will be interesting to see what USFSA comes up with for skating fans. I think you have much greater faith in them than I do.

Not with USFSA. I'm rather hoping about the local organizing folks.

Well, it is possible that the LOC will come up with interesting things for the skaters, and perhaps the fans. I'm basically asking these questions to help a friend who is mid 70's, had 3 joint replacements and surgery, radiation and chemo therapy for cancer. Her spirit is very willing and she dearly loves skating. However, she has days when her stamina and balance are poor which could make walking to People Mover Stations or the Joe an issue.

She was in Detroit for "the whack" and SA and recalls staying at the RenCenter and using the people mover. Perhaps the LOC will have rooms blocked for skating fans, but at this time it looks like the Marriott and Courtyard have no rooms available. She asked me to help her since she doesn't have a computer and I've given her hotel names and numbers which she will check out.

So, even though these issues aren't really "issues" for most of us...walking and steps are for her. Frankly, I think she would love to see the Marathon and take advantage of any music or entertainment provided. I give her major for not just giving up and watching the NBC coverage.

I don't live in Detroit, so I don't know for sure, but it looks like the Cobo Center People Mover is directly across the street from the Crowne Plaza Detroit Convention Center hotel. The next stop is the Joe Louis Arena. If your friend plans her departure and arrival times to be a little bit different than the masses, the People Mover might work best for her in terms of the least amount of walking (the pedestrian walkways into Joe Louis don't look short and the stairs from the Riverwalk look pretty long and steep). Also, the Crowne Plaza offers a considerable discount for Triple A members (about $50 a night cheaper than the regular room prices (edited to add that I'm talking about the regular room prices that you don't pay for in advance)). Even if your friend is not a Triple A member, the cheapest emergency road service you can buy from Triple A is more than worth the discount she would be able to use. My only caveat on the Crowne Plaza (currently under renovation) would be that while it is supposed to be open for business by August, you can't be sure until it's actually ready.

Thanks for the reminder about the Crowne Plaza SkateSand. I did give her that phone number and I'm hoping it will be open in August as advertised. I actually think the order of the People Mover is JoeLouis and then Cobo, but there is also one in the Financial District she might be able to use.

I probably said way too much in my previous post. I'm not badmouthing the LOC or the Marathon, just trying to help out an old friend who loves skating and would dearly love to attend this event. She was very excited when I told her it was going to be in Detroit .

Does anyone know if Skate America has ticket pre-sale like Skate Canada had last time at Worlds? I just don't want to miss an opportunity to get good seats

Funny that this topic just moved to the top of the page, as I just booked a hotel room this morning...still on the fence about attending, but wanted to have a place to stay just in case. I'd generally prefer to go to Skate Canada, but it seems that Skate America will be so much cheaper and more convenient (2 hour direct flight vs. 8-10 hours with two connections, half the price for flight, shorter travel means 2 nights hotel vs. 4 and only 1 day off work instead of 3). I went with the Marriott at the Renaissance Center, looks like about 15 minutes walking by the Riverwalk - anyone have a sense of how safe the Riverwalk would be? I'd probably either cab it or do public transportation at night but I'm hoping that the daytime would be safe enough for walking.

Erin, I am in the same boat, it would be so much cheaper to go to SA vs SC this year, but I hope we know the roster before we have to make a decision!

Looks like the official website will be here. They are telling us to check back on May 20.

Not to be the bearer of "bad new" but the Lions have a home game on Sunday, October 20. It's against Cleveland so I'd expect some Browns fans to be coming into town. With this and the marathon, parking and hotels will be an issue. I really hope they rethink the schedule and not have competitions on Sunday.

Actually the Lions are hosting another Ohio team...Cincinnati Bengals at 1:00 p.m. at Ford Field on October 20. Detroit plays in Cleveland the Sunday before Skate America. I think the football fans coming into downtown for the game will add to crowded parking lots and people mover.

Thanks for the info about the website!

Not particularly. Ford Field and Joe Louis Arena aren't that close to each other.

    That's good to know.

Looks like the go-live date for the website has been pushed back to Saturday at 8 am. I sure hope tix don't go on sale that minute. For one, it's a Sat, and two, it's a holiday weekend.

No Ford Field is farther away and I would assume that football fans would stay at MGM or Motown casinos. There is an idea, try the casinos for a good price. One of them is in Greektown, which is by Joe Louis.
Also, anyone coming to town, you might want to come in a day early and rent a car. You can make the rounds of the rinks. If you're staying in Dearborn, hit Canton first, then north to Novi and then DSC. It's insane that you can see 60% of the olympic/national level skater within 30 minutes of each rink.

Every day the date on the website changes, so I don't think it's very accurate....

We're still waiting for the official site to launch:
