Eminem's movie was based on 8 Mile rd! That's at least a half an hour away. And some of the scenes were from the Alter Rd area (which is also a half mile away).
There is a bubble around the downtown area that gangs and thieves just don't bother to cross. Too many police and cameras. I would avoid anywhere east of I75, south of the Lodge. Dearborn is a nice area. It's home of Ford. So it's really built up nicely.

Here, ladies and gentlemen, speaks a person with great wisdom!

ETA - mysticchic is right. The rest of the city might be going to hell in a handbasket, but downtown is not.

Chris, I will send you a PM later today. I don't think skating fans want to read about the political and economic history of Detroit in this particular thread.

Its tough to be old. I am still trying to wrap my pea brain around the selection system. Was there a thread on how this worked? There is what the USFS would like, what the skaters would like, what the ISU would like, and what the feds would like?
So if the USFS invites D/W, and they accept, then they can also INVITE a 4-6 team from the US or another country but only one? Then everyone else below that level is fair game but they dont have to accept?
Who's on first, What's on second, and I dont know is on third base.

Last year I think they were about $200, $180 if you didn't want the gala. (ballpark figures I'd have to go look on my desktop and I"m too lazy. )

That sounds nice. It's great to read the positive comments about other places from the links at the bottom of each review.

I miss Detroit. I grew up in the suburb of Ferndale (just off 9 Mile Road ) and the trips we took into "town" when I was younger were always exciting and wonderful.

pat c, that was for TWO. It was something like $95 per person, including all taxes and ticket fees. An excellent deal. If I weren't going to Saint John, I would totally go to Detroit.

If Kostner, Kim, V/T or S/S are on the roster, I might actually consider it since it will probably be the last time to see them compete live. Otherwise, I'll watch on IN. If two of those 4 are there,

Oh, there WILL be a thread soon, don't worry! (It's our annual, pre-Grand Prix Announcement thread with info re. host picks, seeded skaters, lists of skaters/teams guaranteed 1 or 2 assignments, depending on 2013 Worlds results, 2012-13 Season Best total scores, and updated ISU World Standings rankings, etc., comeback skaters and/or split couples clauses, etc.!)

So, who do I have to lobby at USFS to make that happen?

I want to see Bobrova, but I guess due to seeding that's ruled out.

BTW, those thinking of staying in Dearborn should plan a trip to Greenfield Village. I actually got married in the Martha-Mary Chapel there.

You were by the Detroit Zoo! (Another great place to visit. )

The polar bear exhibit is pretty awesome.
