Disappointing news. She's not exactly in his league.

Wishing them all the best going forward. It's just too bad there isn't another girl who could skate with him.

Given his height, his choices are extremely limited.

Her solo elements do look very strong on youtube, maybe she will be more focused on pair with such a quality partner?

Thank you for providing the confirmation, danafan. The competition for the third pairs spot next year will be very interesting.

Does Mervin switching countries affect his ability to get two GPs under the comeback skater rule? Either way, they'll almost certainly get SC if they progress reasonably well.

    A partial translation:

As has been the case throughout his career, Tran quickly landed on his skates. With Gauthier and Marcotte, he studied the list of candidates who might skate with him, and he quickly settled on Natasha Purich, a seventeen-year-old from Alberta, who was second at Junior Nationals with Sebastian Arcieri.

"I'm not the tallest of skaters [1.75 m], and Narumi was really tiny," says Tran. "But Natasha is even smaller [1.49 m] and has plenty of experience on the international scene. We're still at the very beginning of our relationship, but I think we have the potential to go far.

"I could not skate in competition this year, but I took the opportunity to continue my studies in mechanical engineering [at McGill] and work in the gym. I am now stronger, more solid [and better able] to carry my partner. And I am still only 22 years old, and I see myself still skating in 2018 and even in 2022."

Her basic skating and speed need some work to catch up with him, but I wouldn't describe her as "not in his league" - she's got the same throws and jumps as Narumi has, with a lot more consistency on the jumps. And Natasha is a born performer - I'm expecting some great programs out of them. I really can't think of anyone in Canada who would be a better partner for him in terms of size and ability, so I'm extremely excited for this partnership!

Mervin Tran and Natasha Purich to skate together

I had the opportunity to watch Natasha live at Junior Nationals this year. She competed in both the Pairs and Singles events. In Pairs, she and her partner won Silver.

In the Singles event, she seemed a fast skater. Although, that could have been excitement. I noticed her coach giving her the slow down hand signal after a jump fall.

I wonder if Mervin will move to Alberta, or if Natasha will move to Montreal?

Natasha has been in Montreal for over a year. She was training there with Arcieri.

I was just wondering if Mervin had found anyone to skate w/yet. Nice to hear and yes, that 3rd spot for next year just got very interesting indeed...

    Good luck to them.

Best of luck to Purich and Tran with their new partnership. The battle for the third spot next season in Canada should be quite intense.

And I hope Richard Gauthier encourages Sebastian Arcieri to keep skating pairs too as with the right new partner he can continue to develop.
