Uruguay, Mexico, Ghana, Portugal, New Zealand, Romania are just some of the countries that are in the playoffs, which starts today, for the last 11 WC spots. Should be really good!

Epic wins for Uruguay and Mexico in the first leg, can't imagine they won't qualify at this point. Honestly, there are so few surprises in the intercontinental playoffs, it seems they should just allot the spots directly or at least attempt to match up comparable federations. NZ vs Jordan and Uruguay vs Mexico would likely have been much more competitive.

Please expect to hear a formal announcement sometime today that Orlando City SC will be joining MLS as their 21st franchise probably in 2015.

Greece, France, Portugal, and Croatia have all booked their place in Brazil 2014. And still no formal announcement about Orlando City SC.

Ghana also advanced to the WC despite losing 1-2 to Egypt. The Pharaohs were sunk by their previous 6-1 loss to the Black Stars. Too bad for B. Bradley and his team but they had an excellent run. It was just bad luck for them and New Zealand both that they got such tough opponents.

Those were some great matches over the past few days, with a fantastic level of intensity and crowd excitement. I especially enjoyed Cameroon/Senegal, Portugal/Sweden, and France/Ukraine which went down to the wire. So nice to see the French fans enthusiastically supporting their team in that amazing comeback.

    It is now official: http://articles.sun-sentinel.com/201...n-team-usl-pro

Please note that Mr Garber also did everything but announce a team in Miami, as per the headline, this is, after all, an article from a South Florida newspaper - formerly the Ft Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel. The Miami team will come to pass in due time. The Orlando Lions, however, will take the field in 2015.

Glad to see Mexico confirm their qualification with an away win as well. Like the French, they really have too much talent not to play in the WC finals. Hopefully, the players continue to respond favorably to this latest coaching change.

More negative press about the treatment of the workers in Qatar who are working on the WC sites.

Very sad news today about the death of Bill Foulkes. He was one of the few Manchester United 'Busby Babes' to survive the 1958 Munich Air Disaster. He was also the only player apart from Bobby Charlton, whose career spanned the entire period from the Munich Air Disaster to the European Cup win in 1968. He scored the goal that enabled Manchester United to beat Real Madrid in the semi-final and which got them to the 1968 final against Benfica. Manchester United won the final 4-1 on an emotional night which brought the story of Manchester United's 10 year recovery from the Munich Air Disaster full circle. Matt Busby, himself, was almost killed in the Munich Air Disaster. He was so badly injured that he twice received the last rites and spent 9 weeks in hospital. The true extent of the disaster was kept from him whilst he recovered. He later said that when he was eventually told, he felt like quitting. However, he returned to rebuild the side (which ultimately included Denis Law and George Best, as well as Foulkes and Charlton), which culminated in the 1968 European Cup triumph. The scenes at end of the final when the players embrace Busby were simply incredible. It was more than a sporting event - a story of a journey back from hell and a fitting tribute to all those who died

RIP Bill - a truly great man

I hadn't known about that tragedy, reminiscent of the 1961 US figure skating team.

My boys are doing better in Europe than they are at home. I guess 5-0 against Leverkusen will have to do for now.
