USA's Alex Johnson will not compete in 2013-14; hopes to back next season

Alex Johnson has written a new journal entry on his official site that explains his decision not to compete this season due to injury : http://www.figureskatersonline.com/a...n/journal.html
    Excerpt:
    ...
Today, my joint is as stable as can be and I shouldn't have to worry about spraining my ankle ever again. My doctor used a titanium screw to hold the ligaments in my fibula as well as cadaver tissue to reinforce the support. However, my recovery isn't going as quickly as expected and I'm not able to do everything that I would like to. I have nerve damage to my leg and it has inhibited my ability to fully use my foot. I have seen handfuls of doctors to try to fix this problem, but the only thing that I can do is wait and let my body heal over time.
    ...
Clearly, this has been one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make, but it's for the best. My ankle has been a problem since 2010 and I really wanted to rid this issue from my life. Now that this is all in the past, I can really focus my energy on recovering and becoming an even stronger skater for the 2014-2015 season. As difficult as it will be to watch Nationals in Boston, I'm still hoping to be there to support all my fellow skaters.
He had a breakthrough at 2013 U.S. Nationals, placing 7th overall in the Senior Men's event.

You can send Alex a note of support/encouragement via the Contact page of his site: http://www.figureskatersonline.com/a...n/contact.html

Thanks for the link, Sylvia. I hate to see any athlete impacted by injury, and it must be especially disappointing in this season. I'll be sure to send a message.

I'm sad that he will have to miss this season, but now he can come back and be extra awesome next year.

Oh dear. The kid can't seem to catch a break. This sounds bad and I'm not sure he'll be able to come back at all (he's already 23).

I hope he switches to ice dance. (I'm only half joking.)

I just absolutely hate the fact that so many skaters this year are battling injuries. It's just so disheartening.

here's hoping his recovery goes much better now that he's not trying to compete this year.
Q: Why can't I read the competition threads?

Good to see nice reply tweets to Alex from Jeremy Abbott and Sandra Bezic, among many others (ETA: including some FSUers ).

I mentioned this performance in my first post... here's a link to Alex's "Eleanor Rigby" FS, choreographed by Tom Dickson, at 2013 U.S. Nationals (Japanese commentary): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-1AI1fXdiE

Thanks for the link, Sylvia. I've heard of Alex before but have never actually seen his skating, and what a shame! Wonderful program, and the way he moves across the across is just lovely. So sorry to hear about his injury, but I hope the recovery goes well and we can see him again next season. Such a hard decision to make to sit this year about, but I'm glad he did so. This will hopefully save him a lot of trouble down the road.

Absolutely heartbreaking! I enjoyed his LP at Nationals last season better than anyone's, including all disciplines. I wish him a fast, complete recovery and all the best for the future.

What a shame. I really liked him last season.
