Actress Bonnie Franklin has Died

She passed away after battling pancreatic cancer. She was 69.

Her role as Ann Romano on One Day At A Time was a groundbreaking role (as was the series) as a single mom raising two teenagers (along with all of the chaos that went with it).

The cause was complications of pancreatic cancer, family members said. They had announced the diagnosis in September.

Ms. Franklin also acted on the stage and in movies and for years sang and danced in a nightclub act. But she was most widely known in the role of Ann Romano, one of the first independent women to be portrayed on TV wrestling with issues like sexual harassment, rape and menopause. Ms. Franklin — green-eyed, red-haired, button-nosed and 5-foot-3 — brought a buoyant comic touch to the part.

It was a joy to watch Bonnie get a guest shot on Valerie Bertinelli's show Hot in Cleveland last season. She still had her chops playing a character nothing like Ann Romano. A true performer in every sense of the word. RIP

She didn't do a very good job raising Mackenzie Phillips but I thought she would still outlast her.

Love that show and that was the first thing I thought of when I heard of her death--RIP Bonnie.

I watched it but that was before cable and I'm not sure I would have if there had been more choices. RIP Bonnie.

ps - If it was such a good, ground-breaking show why isn't it in syndication?

As I do I too. It really is one of the worst of the worst because by the time they find it, it's too late to do anything but Pallative Support Care. It truly is one disease that is beyond cruel and hideous.

I loved this show back in the day. I knew this was coming after hearing the announcement of the diagnosis in the Fall, but it doesn't make learning it any easier.

RIP Bonnie and thanks for all of the laughs.

In an interview with ET, Mackenzie Phillips said that Bonnie did as much as she could to encourage her to get clean; and stay that way, while she was doing "One Day at a Time".
She even told the producers that they had to fire her, after she didn't do so.

Mackenzie said, difficult as it was, Bonnie did the right thing.
