Michelle Kwan's Short Program at the 1998 Goodwill Games:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPTN9aL8gJI

Despite her mistakes in the long (fall of a triple loop and a doubled Salchow), she skated with much more speed and conviction than in Nagano.

This is an excellent choice. I think Michelle's 98 nationals overshadowed this performance, but her Goodwill Games was SPECTACULAR too. She doesn't get enough credit for the performance in hindsight but the crowd went NUTS for it. It was one of the most cohesive short programs I have ever seen. And it came at the end one of the craziest, most grueling seasons of her life? Spectacular.

At 2002 Olympics, MK also got a standing O from some in the crowd (and wild clapping from everyone) before she skated, and then a standing O right before she ended:

Todd Eldredge's 1998 Worlds' free skate. He was doing one of his amazing combination spins towards the end of his "First Knight" program, and "Uncle" Dickie said, "This is enough to bring the audience to their feet," or something like that. It was also very heartening to see/hear him get a standing ovation before he skated in SOI (Kurt had introduced him) shortly after the 2002 SLC Olympics.

It helps that Worlds were in the US, but B&A were the first place US team at this point, but the audience was clapping & standing for D&W even before the end of the program

Michelle Kwan, long program at 1998 Nationals, and probably the short, although I'm not 100% sure. That was when she had the foot injury and no one was sure what to expect.

I was there for Shen/Zhao at 2003 Worlds and I will never forget it. I always wanted to be at a competition for a "moment," and although I was there for the MK performance I mentioned above, S/Z was amazing. None the less because Chinese flags were waving all over the arena, and I'm old enough to remember a time when Chinese flags flying in Washington DC was unthinkable.

In 2003, the arena was in the middle of Washington DC's Chinatown.

Somehow, other than Beijing, it seemed like a perfect place for Shen & Zhao's wonderful 2003 performances.

For me, I was lucky of being there at the 2008 World championships in Gotheborg: the Kerr´s OD, we all were just giving them the biggest standing ovation for anybody in that championship IMO

The performance was even more amazing by her having sprained her ankle earlier. It was doubtful that she would be able to skate.

I was sitting just one section over. What a great night it was with Shawn and Patrick.

Peggy was so happy too. Aw, I miss that commentary team.

Bezic truly knew how to pick excellent music for Lipinski's programs. I wasn't too keen on her Anastasia SP, but Lipinski's charisma could really sell anything. I wish more skaters would skate with the grit and conviction that Lipinski almost always had.

What about Jeffrey Buttle with his World Championships 2008 lp "Aarat"? That program was so awesome. Jeff did everything right. So artistic he is.

^^ I guess Midori might have won gold there under IJS, and without figures* as part of the competition -- or at least bronze since she did need more polishing artistically. She came into her own the following year. I love Midori Ito!

(* I do think figures should never have been completely eliminated as part of basic training for skaters).

Aren Nielsen's LP at 1993 Skate America (I was there, to watch this great performance). Watch his spread eagles at the 4:00 mark (approx)
