Many Jewish families have a Chanukah party during the holiday, but the observances for the holiday are relatively simple. We light the Chanukiah (Chanukah menorah - candlelabra) for 8 nights, sing the Hebrew/English blessings over the lighting of the candles, sing Chanukah songs, play the dreidl (a kind of top) game, eat potato latkes, soofganiyot (fried jelly donuts), exchange gifts. Some families exchange one gift for the whole family (my family's tradition). Others give the children gifts each night. There are communal actitivities that take place in synagogues during Chanukah - concerts with Chanukah music (I participated in one last night as a chorus member), dinners where the traditional holiday foods are served (latkes, in particular).

Reigning U.S. champion Max Aaron boasts the most technically difficult programs, chocked with quadruple jumps, but his go-for-broke style results in frequent falls.

Aaron, just 21, is the reigning national champion after taking seventh in 2012 and almost quitting the sport. The former hockey player plans the most quadruple jumps of any American man between his two programs, but had a hard time staying upright during the Grand Prix season, finishing third and seventh, respectively.

Rework of the free skate. Please no more Carmen. Unfortunately he's still with Lori Nichol.

Max was totally charming in the "Legends" show last night. He did do some retakes, much to the audience's delight!

His quote mentions that he is moving jumps around, but I wonder if he is keeping 3 quads in the LP.

Hopefully they had taken out the 4T, and only going with the 4S. His 4T has been very inconsistent. Why risk it at US Nationals? He needs to focus on the PCS.

U.S. men move on in Lysacek's absence
    By Nick Zaccardi,
    NBC OlympicTalk

    Dec 12, 1:00pm EST

    Excerpt:

The end of Evan Lysacek‘s Olympic comeback leaves a gaping hole for U.S. men’s figure skaters to attempt to fill.
There will be one fewer opponent for those precious berths, but reigning U.S. champion Max Aaron said he was disappointed not to be able to compete against Lysacek.

“Even here, sitting next to him in the locker room I’m like, ‘Oh my god it’s Evan,’” Aaron said at the Tribute To American Legends Of The Ice event in East Rutherford, N.J., on Wednesday. Lysacek made an appearance at the event.

The lovely Lauren Behr attended the Tribute to American Legends of the Ice and was gracious enough to share her experience with TSL.

    Excerpt:

Max Aaron then came out in a flannel shirt that matched Scotty McCreery. I immediately became fearful that they were going to force the skaters to make Scotty happen for the entire show. Max performed in his Max-esque way but stumbled on a triple axel and popped a triple lutz. After the show, he did like five retakes until he got that lutz even after a fall. You got the sense he would have done it 50 times if that’s what it took. It’s what I imagine Tara Lipinski’s storied frenzies were like, only Max was cheerful during the whole thing. Not sure what Nationals will hold for him, but you can’t count out that kind of grit. And props to him for signing autographs for what seemed like every kid who wanted one.

Max Aaron waves to the crowd after his performance during the 2013 P&G Wal-Mart Tribute to American Legends of the Ice held at Izod Center on Wednesday night (December 11) in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
