Just watched the TSL interview that Max did over the summer. It was the first interview I've really heard him do so it was interesting; I was pretty impressed. He seems like such a methodical, analytical person. I can see how he's been able to master so many jumps; he really has worked hard to break them down and figure out exactly how to do it right. I also really respect the fact that he is AWARE of his shortcomings on the artistry front and took proactive measures to fix them.

HOWEVER, as much as he can literally will into being any sort of jump he wants, you can't exactly do a "by the numbers" program and have it be artistic. I think artistry requires a certain amount of freedom of expression and vulnerability that can't be learned from a book.

I admit, watching Max's programs this year left be a bit bored. I enjoyed him last year; I thought what he lacked in say, artistic expression, he made up for in personality and energy and I found that much more engaging to watch.

My advice to Max would be, don't try to fit yourself into the mold of other skaters. Improve yourself in every way you can, but don't lose sight of who YOU are as a person and a skater and let that shine through, first and foremost. It might be harder to find your own way instead of just copying the styles of others, but I think that the audience and judges will recognize when your expression and artistry on the ice is really YOU and not someone else's idea of you.

He's a great talent and I really wish the US men had three spots for Sochi.

I agree. His TRON number was something he really liked and identified with; and the WEST SIDE STORY characterization fit his strong, masculine image.

Like the aforementioned Elvis Stojko, Max needs to define his own personal style/artistic expression, and build on that.

I agree with Spareoom and dardar1126. I preferred both of Max's programs last year also. They seemed organic and authentic to who he is as a person and as a skater. He is strong and powerful. There is room for him in this sport. He can still improve within his own style, within COP.

I liked Max's West Side Story program better than anything he did this year, but I didn't like Tron that much. I like his Carmen okay, but do not like his short program.

Max needs to be Max, and not try to be someone else. But if Max wants to be a hip swiveling ballroom dancing type, then he should keep trying it.
