Finally back from my first NHK trophy! I know it wasn't my best event but it's all a process. It was such an honor to be invited to compete!

Imho Max is behind on the curve, meaning he has only one last chance to prove himself, and that's at Nationals!

Seriously, if he wants to make the Olympic Team he's going to have to hit it out of the ballpark, as imho he didn't do so good on the GP this season, especially in comparison to some other American men....

On the (+) side, American Nationals tends *not* to take into consideration how well a skater did on the GP/GPF, et al, rather the here & now, that is US Nationals, and if he's 1 or 2 he'll be on the Olympic Team, as it should be.

I'm not sure he really did that badly on the GP, especially if you consider it was his FIRST season on it.
    He got 3rd and 7th.
By comparison, Jason Brown (also first season) got 3rd and 5th.
Jeremy Abbott (a well established veteran) got 3rd and 6th.
So yeah, Max is the lowest total, but he got a bronze medal the same as these guys, and basically what they are all showing is that the US men are a bunch of GP bronze medalists who aren't going to be competitive at the Olympics anyway, so there isn't much reason to 'rig' it for favorites. So yes, of the people 'in the running' Max isn't doing great, but IMO, none of them put up a strong case. With a silver and a 4th place Rippon is the only person who seems to have put out a great case for making the team. Farris and Dornbush of course still have a competition, and I think it is still possible for Rippon to get GPF.

So really, I think ALL these men still have to prove themselves- at Nationals.

And I think you are right that US doesn't weight the previous competitions much, but I do think how they do is in the back of the mind of the judges and influences their scores.

I love, I mean I LUUUUV Max's Tron program. What the hell happened since then? It's all been downhill since then, hasn't it? Classic example of trying to put too much on your plate.

Max, you are not a classically artistic skater. It's okay, don't try to be one. Just be you: Jumps and Jumps and Unorthodox Moves and Jumps and Jumps and Unorthodox Moves-- Hell, that's Plushenko's m.o., and he's a ****in' legend!

When was the last time before Max that the national champion came up through sectionals? (Did Max also compete at Regionals last year?)

(Did he win sectionals last year? Wikipedia doesn't have the entry, which is kind of surprising.)

There was no Senior Men's event at Southwestern Regionals last year. I believe Johnny Weir was the most recent man to win a national title (2004) after having competed at Sectionals.

ETA: Yes, Aaron won Mids last year with big scores - from last year's Sectionals thread in the Kiss and Cry section:

    Senior Grand Prix reflections:

As I sit here in Moscow's DME airport, I feel so privileged to have coached at four Grand Prix events this season for many reasons.

The first being that to attend the competitions with such talented athletes as Max Aaron and Agnes Zawadzki is truly a blessing and a coach's dream.

To witness Max train like a beast at home and take such huge athletic and artistic risks in his Grand Prix debut makes me proud. While I know he carried a lot of expectations on his shoulders and in many people's eyes he did not live up to the hype, he did in mine. Instead of resting on his laurels and falling into the trap many elite skaters do and just trying to "skate clean," he "failed upwards" (see the book, The Talent Code) and in the process showed all the young skaters around the world that it is ok to make mistakes and to never stop reaching until you are the very best. Carry on, Max!

And Agnes...what can I say? To help her overcome her fears and skate a clean short at the Rostelecom Cup and achieve a personal best was such a rewarding coaching moment. And while I know she did not win a medal here, the improvement in her long program in two weeks by nearly 10 points is a testament that there is no substitute for hard work and training. While I know she still has more work to do, it is important as her coach to acknowledge the small steps she takes along the way. I can hardly wait until our next long program training day! It is called the "road to Sochi" because it is long and winding. Makes me think of a Beatles' song

Finally, a special thank you to the fans from Japan, Russia, China and the US. I always say, "Success is for everyone," and your genuine support for all of the skaters no matter which country they represent shows this. When we see you in the hotel lobbies or backstage at the arenas, your smiles, kind words of encouragement and gifts help us carry on our challenging Olympic journey.

Peace and love this holiday season,

    Tom Zakrajsek

P.S. A special shout out to Kris Wirtz, my colleague from Canada, whose positive energy and carefree spirit made this trip so much fun. Your support of Agnes and I truly embodies the Olympic ideals. With much respect and love bro!

Cranberry Jell-O Mold -- Max Aaron (Figure Skating)

    Ingredients:

    1(6 ounce) package red Jell-O
    2 cups boiled water
    1 cup orange juice
1 large (16 ounce) can whole berry cranberry sauce
1 large can mandarin oranges drained

Mix Jell-O with hot boiled water until dissolved. Add cranberry sauce, mix thoroughly. Add juice and rest of ingredients. Pour into mold and refrigerate. Unmold before serving. Dip into hot water for a few seconds.

3/8-American figure skater Max Aaron, the reigning U.S. national champion, has perfected a recipe for a cranberry Jell-o mold, a unique Thanksgiving side.

    http://www.nbcolympics.com/sites/nbc...SI_7509183.jpg

4/8-The Arizona-native's recipe is simple, and all you'll need is Jell-o, water, orange juice, cranberry sauce, and can of mandarin oranges.

Grrrr. "The quad" is not one jump! It can be several different jumps!
