Thanks, Sylvia. That is actually more non-European JGPs than I'd remembered, but (excluding finals, which are now probably scheduled more around the seniors than juniors) only one non-European JGP per year since 2007*, and other than the post-9/11 cancellation year, never more than one JGP in North America. They used to more or less rotate Can/US/Mex for one slot. It's probably not mainly a matter of no one to host in NA - it may be that ISU has decided there will now just be one non-European slot.

*not quite - there was one in South Africa in 2008, the year before they changed from 8 to 7 events - not covered in Sylvia's NA/Asia list.

But members have to apply to host a JGP and if I take Germany as an example they only apply every second year but seem to have managed to make a small profit out of hosting it since they moved it to Dresden.

What I'd like to know is way the Asian and Amerikan federations don't apply more often! Do they not care or are they more interested in hosting SGP and Championships?

No way would ISU decide that when non European countries are the ones where skating is most popular, for the most part.

JGP is JGP though. Unless you're really lucky, those are loss-making events to hold.

It has Never been a world sport. All of Africa and South America countries dont have a ISU federation except for 3 nations. And in Asia there's only about a dozen from a continent with more than 50 countries. It has always been Europe plus special guest powerhouse stars CAN,USA and just lately JPN and CHN.

All those European countries wouldn't be hosting it if they were making a loss. There's money there, just not in ticket sales.

Well seeing as 42 out of the 68 figure skating members in the ISU are in Europe, I'd say that balance was more or less right.

I know they're not money makers, but given that, it's curious to me that it's mostly Eastern European countries that step up and pursue them. Why not the richer feds?

Does it cost the Eastern European federations anything to rent a rink for a week? If the federations own the rinks or can get them for free or on the cheap from a local authority, it may actually be easier for them to host the event than it would be for other federations.

That might be it. Pretty much all ice rinks in Poland are owned by the local authorities which probably rent the ice for free (as a kind of sponsorship) for the purpose of international events.

If rinks had to be hired from private companies, then those events would surely run on a big loss.

And, indeed, that's why the USFSA often hosts events in Colorado Springs and Lake Placed.

Canada hasn't hosted a JGP since 2005.

It was the only event Montreal would occasionally get. I guess no more.

I don't think the skating Federation owns the rinks. At least not in the UK. The rink is owned by the Local authority.
