ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating – Calendar Season 2013/14

The ISU Council approved the following calendar for the season 2013/14:

Riga, Latvia August 27-September 1, 2013 (incl. Pair Skating)
Mexico City, Mexico September 4-8, 2013
Kosice, Slovakia September 11-15, 2013 (incl. Pair Skating)
Gdansk, Poland September 18-22, 2013
Minsk, Belarus September 25-29, 2013 (incl. Pair Skating)
Ostrava, Czech Rep. October 2-6, 2013 (incl. Pair Skating)
Tallinn, Estonia October 9-13, 2013 (incl. Pair Skating)

Those are usually the feds that apply for hosting the events. US (Lake Placid) and France (Courchevel) tend to do it every 2 years.

Because they offer to host? I don't think these events are great money makers.

I know they're not money makers, but given that, it's curious to me that it's mostly Eastern European countries that step up and pursue them. Why not the richer feds?

Eastern Europe has been very active for getting the European Championships, too. And then half of the arena is empty because they don't have any interesting home skaters.

Actually, this year it was mostly full, especially for long programs and free dance. For SP it is sometimes difficult to take time off for people, so they prefer to come in the evening.

Also, this year one whole side was reserved for press and VIP (skaters, skating federations etc) so at some events it could have looked half empty if the camera caught that side of the hall, but only because the public was not allowed to go there.

Have you been to any European championships? The only one I recall being half empty was in 2008 and this year's was really well attended.

When will the Senior B's be announced? I hope those are spread around more widely.

If the federations don't bid for them, they aren't going to get them. For all we know the Asian federations aren't interested in organising JGPs.

So you weren't in Zagreb then, I take it. As somebody mentioned upthread one side of the rink was cordoned off for press, skaters and officials. The side that was for the general public was pretty full, especially for the frees. The gala was more or less sold out.

I guess since Amodio only presents to one side of the rink he wouldn't have been aware of the audience behind him.

This is the first time Košice, SVK is hosting a JGP - the other 6 cities have hosted at least once, or a few times, before.

Because American and Asian federations aren't offering to host them.

It's good this way as well since many federations can't afford to send skaters to events happening outside of Europe.

Canada hasn't hosted a JGP since 2005.

Japan last hosted a JGP in 2010 (in Karuizawa).

And they aren't hosting a senior international event either even though it would be really in their favour and would surely have loads of skaters competing (many international skaters train in Canada and the US).

Canada did host the combined Junior & Senior GP Finals in Quebec City in December 2011.

I'm still a little traumatized from being so scrunched during the jammed free skates in Zagreb. The arena was pretty packed. Amodio should ask Cinquanta why there weren't 5000 people because it's the ISU that holds most of the seats on the judges' hostage.

On topic... some pretty beautiful locations for the JGP. Riga, Tallinn, Gdansk, Kosice... you could make a great Eastern Euro vacation out of it!
